I've been wondering if the economy is having an effect on sales. My peak sales period is usually Oct - Dec, so the period we're in right now usually isn't my strongest sales period (although you'd think that surf music would be most popular during the summer months.....). However, I've noticed that despite having 2 new CD's (Bonney & Buzz and The Madeira), a DVD (The Penetrators) and a new Continental magazine/CD (with Dick Dale as the featured artist) all out within the last 4-6 weeks that there'd be a big spike in sales, but that hasn't really happened. I understand that the Bonney & Buzz release probably has somewhat limited appeal to a certain audience, but with the others I really expected them to do better. I'm nowhere near panicking about it - I'm selling enough to pay for the production costs and postage, but might be struggling a bit with a new Surfites CD scheduled to go into production in a few weeks. I guess part of the problem too is just releasing so much stuff at the same time, but it's just the way things panned out with these projects.
Still hoping to get the time/funds together to continue work on the Continental book too.....

Sean,
I've been wanting to put in a order for a few different titles and prob 3 or each of them when I do, for people that dont know about the releases.
But I need to make sure I have enough for my trip to Canada, and my bills.
But as soon as I'm sure of everything, I will put in a order.

its a pain in all our behinds, but despite rising fuel costs my band is still gonna kick off our CA tour next year, even if fuel goes up to $10 a gal! A good tip, plan more daytime gigs near busy areas especially beaches, we pulled in a load of people the other day on a Sunday (considered a slow day downtown) so I guess its just a matter of targeting the crowds and finding a way to not let the system get us down. Cali is my "Graceland" so no matter what I will find a way to get there and rock out with some surf!!!!

I have no doubt Ivan's analysis is correct, but instead of moaning about it we can do something productive like budgeting and finding a second job if needed. I, for one, am going to cut back on buying Hawaiian shirts.

FYI, having been California last weekend and living (surviving I should say) on the East Coast, it seems as though the gas, food, etc...prices are higher the closer you are to coastal region. Don't know why, but the price per gallon in CA is just about the same as it is in CT/NY. It could be in part because of the gas tax.
And how does this affect surf shows for me? I find it much easier to book local bands than those that have to travel. In addition, I feel obligated to pay the traveling bands more than the local bands that play just so they can cover their gas costs. Fortunately the local bands are okay with the uneven split as they understand they are occasionally the "traveling band" .
On the positive side, folks are staying close to home this summer and hitting the local shows. I limited my promos to CT papers & radios stations. I expect a good crowd tonite as people are vacationing at home this year.

I think high prices will cure high prices. I know this sounds insane, but I think our country is finally starting to wake up to this realization. People will start cutting back all they can, but we will not be able to make an impact until the car companies can produce cars that can get a minimum of 50 mpg.
It is ludicrous for anyone to blame the consumers. When the economy was hurt badly after 9/11 we were spoon fed crap that we can help the economy by buying SUV's and go shopping. The car companies should have been working on this decades ago. I also believe that they are suppressing technology that already exists. I have heard of engineers making car engines that beat 100mpg in their sheds. Why can't the car companies do the same?
My last point point is that the media loves selling people doom and gloom. That is all we have seen for the last year or two. They want you to think the end is coming near when it is not. Europe has lived with high energy prices for decades. We will adapt. It will be a slow process with some pain, but we will adapt.
For now support your bands buy doing anything you can do for them. Buy CD's, go to local shows, advertise for them, etc. Everyone knows the deal of the sluggish economy right now. Do what you can and they will appreciate it.

More fuel efficient cars are a very good thing, but.........................
if we all drove cars that got 50 MPG, the gas companys would raise
prices to $10.00 a gallon or whatever price it took to maintain
their huge profits. The only way we hurt them is to stop using gas.
The water and energy utilities have been pushing us to conserve for
years, but what happens when we reduce useage and their profits
drop? They run to the Public Utilities Commission to get an increase
because their profits are way down. We get screwed no matter what
we do.

Maybe it's time for hillbilly surf music: Acoustics played in bathrooms (for reverb effect). Think of the cash we'd save not filling up our reverb tanks all the time!

I never get to any Surf shows. The nearest band might be The Urban Surf Kings, and even they're a two or three hour drive away, so it's impractical at any price of gas.
I do know that we (my wife and I) are being a lot pickier about SCA events we attend in the area, now that it's gone up to at least $1.30 (Cdn) per liter recently.

Well, I hate even to mention it, but I hear that solid-state reverb gets more dB per liter than tubes.

Bite your tongue!
Four words: "Salvation Army Thrift Shop". Two or three dollars each, tops.

It depends. Has Dick Dale named any financial advisors for his White House Staff?
