i'm sure you have noticed that they actually re-record songs with slight variations and re-name them, right? that's kind of annoying.

anyways, even with that big setback, they are IMO one the THE most underrated surf bands ever. Michael Lloyd was a very good guitarist, let alone the fact that he was only 14...

so i guess this thread can be for ramblings and/or random facts about The New Dimensions...since i can find nothing about them anywhere else online.

Norm of the ghastly ones said its one of his favorite bands,

they and Slacktone both cover "Cat on a hot foam board"

I had heard that the drummer I believe went on to be in 3 dog night.
wtf????

Fits right in with Jim Messina and David Geddes.
Where's Klas? He's another ND devotee.

I thought it was the electric pianist, Jummy Greenspoon. And I think Michael Lloyd ended up oroducing The Osmonds, among other illuminaries. It's in the liner notes.

GREAT band.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

I'm a big fan and think the New Dimensions had everything you look for in a surf band.

It was only a couple of songs and I find the variations interesting, especially since the songs are great.

There's an interview with rhythm guitarist Craig Nuttycombe:

http://home.unet.nl/kesteloo/newdimensions.html

"I was actually fired from the band by Michael's mother. It's funny in retrospect. Michael's mother (whom I liked very much) was sort of the manager of the band and used to drive us to most of the gigs in her station wagon. As I said earlier, a lot of our parties were frat parties and they would always have a keg or two and it was at these functions I started experimenting with beer. I don't really remember getting out of control, but Michael's mother thought it was a problem and I was asked to leave."

How do you experiment with beer?! Laughing

Besides the fantastic Cat on a Hot Foam Board, my favorites by these guys are Failsafe and Chicky Run. Soul Surf is pretty good, too.

Anybody know if Failsafe was first recorded by the New Dimensions or the Original Surfaris?

I would be curious to find that out as well. The Original Surfaris version of that song is one of my favorite surf tunes!

The song was written by New Dimensions members Michael Lloyd and Jimmy Greenspoon. Doesn't necessary mean they recorded it first although I would guess so.

i don't know about Failsafe, but i know there are more than a couple New Dimension songs that were written by Michael Lloyd and were first recorded by the Original Surfaris. I've only heard a handful of OS songs, so i wouldn't know, but that's what i remember reading from the liner notes in the New Dimensions CD...im too lazy to go dig it out and confirm this.

Along with most of the ones mentioned, "Big Soul Beat" is one of my favorites. Really simple, but killer.

Test tubes, beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks. Oh, and a lab coat.

What, you never cut the head off a plastic pink flamingo that you stole off a neighbor's lawn, filled it with beer, and consumed the equivalent of a 6-pack in one gulp?

What did you people do in high school anyway??

I never did that before, but I think that I might try tonight!

I've been hang out here for over a year, and have never noticed any mention of this band. I found a best of comp online and definitely liked what I heard so I ordered it. Thanks for bringing this up, Josh!

Chicky Run and Failsafe are awesome!

I had my ceramic smiling green frog stolen from my front lawn, but knowing my neighbours; I shudder to think of his demise. poor soul. Sorry it's off topic a bit.

I have brought them up a couple of times in the past. The Best Of CD contains selected material from their 3 never reissued albums as well as some unreleased tracks. The CD also includes two totally wild live recordings from the Santa Monica Surf Fair. This is pretty unique since there isn't almost any live material from the 1st wave ever released let alone reissued.

Thanks, I'm more excited than ever now to give this a listen. There is so much here on the forum that sometimes I miss seeing the forest for the trees. The New Dimensions is a good example. I'm always looking for good comps or CD releases of previously unavailable material from 1st wave groups to build a good foundation for my music collection. The Astronauts also looks like a "must have".

I mean, I own various tracks by most of the 1st wave groups mentioned here, but they are on various "survey" style compilations--i.e. each band represented by a track or two.

I'd like to get a better picture of as many of the 1st wave groups as a "whole" as possible.

(That also probably means getting a turntable again.)

or getting a bunch of cds on Del Fi or Sundazed.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

totally unrelated to anything said so far, but is it just me, or is the trem-picking they have in some songs some of the fastest you've heard? cat on a hot foam board? geez! that's fast, especially for a 15 year old!

also, why does the bassist occasionally pick up a guitar? with all due respect to Satan's Pilgrims, but i think 3 guitars is overkill, let alone the fact the in the New Dimensions there is no bass when 3 guitars are being played.
