On Don't Drink the water I use it pretty much throughout on our cover of the Coppertone's song Undertow.

As for Pollo songs check out the intro to 4 Sticks on the Live in Japan town CD. That'll wake you up.

Sorry, guys - we're not done at just three beaters:

My goodness ,what an instrument of foolishness ! Most double bass playing to me is like guitar shredding,I don't like either. Tommy Aldridge in Black oak Arkansas, yes ! Surf , NO !

Well, i would say, doublebass is not bad in surfmusic like man or astroman did.

In traditonal surf from the 60's , doublebass is very bad...

so you have ti decide what youzr surf style is

cheers

do You have experience in this or is it just guessing?
i havent heard any 60´s surf with dubble bassdrums..

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

i could see it being kind of cool if used right... think the drumming style of the Atlantics, with bass instead of toms, etc.

I'm not a drummer, but I occasionally play one for the sake of home-recording.

To me, less is more when it comes to surf music, no matter which instrument you play.

I think the instrumentation should fit the music, visually as well as sonically. When I'm watching a metal band, an 80 piece power kit can be da shi'aat. But for a surf drummer, anything beyond a simple four piece kit looks like overkill. I don't even like to see two mounted toms, or two floor toms in a surf kit.

Nothing looks cooler than a vintage four-piece Slingerland or Ludwig kit for surf. Just my .02 cents.

I am a drummer that is learning guitar.I always liked a 5 piece until I started playing samba and later surf and needed the ride cymbal in the 2nd mounted tom position so I could keep up that ride pattern without my arm falling off(or feeling like it) ! I love Ludwig Silver Sparkle or Black Diamond pearl. james

Cool Thats what u need!

Not surf but the drumming heard on many tracks by Terry & the Bunnys are among my all time favorite. Don't know how much or in what way they actually used two bass drums since I can't recall noticing it.

If you're going to bring your slave pedal, or worse yet, second bass drum, then I'm bringing my Flying V...

A clip showing Hal Blaine's double bass drums (including the J&D drawings) from the great 1966 On The Run Jan & Dean TV pilot. On "Hang On Sloopy" you can actually hear him working them. And notice the little old lady from Pasadena in the crowd!
