I wouldn't be listening to the things I am without file sharing, no doubt about it. I still buy more music than anybody I know, but that's only because I've gotten savvy from my less legal research. I know not everybody backs their downloads up with physical purchases, but I think it's done a lot to level the playing field.

I buy it if I like it.
I find myself downloading less these days. Most bands are offering enough of a feeler online to determine if I will want to buy the album.

Yeah, I used to download stuff a few years ago, but now I just listen to songs on myspace to get a feel for a band. That or clips on amazon. Since I've started doing that, my CD collection has grown quite a bit.

Hot subject alright, I'm somewhat non plussed by it all, I sample music and if I like it enough I go buy the Cd or album. Record companies have screwed musicians and artists for way way too long and pay back time is upon them, it has never been easier to copy music legally or otherwise, also it has never been easier than now to make your own Cd/record, market it and distribute it to your fans or the general public.
Web sites like the Madeira, Slacktone or The Penetrators have with their sample tracks and so forth are great. I would never have bought one of their albums a few years ago as I was pretty unfamiliar with this type of music. Apart from the songs/tunes you hear on the radio every so often like Hawaii 5-O, Pipeline, Miserlou, Bombora, having the sample tracks got me enthused enough to buy a couple of Cd's.
Piracy or ripping off people by either a record company or people doing it in other ways is never a nice thing, but it happens, has happened and most likely will continue to happen no matter what we say or do. The saving grace I believe is this, if a person wants the best quality sound from a band or artist, they will go the extra mile to get the original recording and not some mp3 quality recording from outer Uzbekistan.

If you're really a fan of the band, support them in any way you can. If that means going to see them in concert or buying their
album as opposed to "pirating" it then do it. I personally still buy cd's of artists I feel strongly about. I can't even begin to tell you how many artists I wouldn't be listening to (and buying their albums) if my parents hadn't had a copy of there record on tape (early pirating, I suppose) or a friend had given me a copy of their cd, while telling me you really need to hear this band.
