I don't see any surf shows listed for the Baja Cantina in Marina Del Rey, is it not happening this year? The couple I've gone to have had good crowds, would think they would continue? Anyone know if there will be any this year?
Thanks.

Unfortunately not gonna happen. I saw Jamie the other night, and she said new owners with rock bands instead.
Bummer.

Tis true as Billy said.
Thanks for asking. I am the one who booked those shows happily for the last 6 years. This year would have been our 7th! Unfortunately, the owner brought in a new manager who was totally unaware of our once very successful Wednesday night scene there at the Baja, nor did he seem to care. From what I gathered, they were just interested in bringing in yer basic run o the mill local band, no surf.
It's a real shame. That was a great gig for bands, especially traveling bands who needed a good paying gig on a weeknight. We were always treated well by the other manager and I was under the assumption the owner too was happy with our summer season. When we would leave at the end of August or beginning of September, they would shut the back bar down because the crowd was gone!
Anyway, I am working on getting another great venue together for next summer. Stay tuned to the Mach Turtle gig page as I'm sure that's where you saw the shows listed and I thank you for checking it out!

That was a great scene there. at Baja. You would have everyone from fist wave performers to well known current performers in the music scene. It was a great place to hang, have a brew & network as well as see some really great performances. All this is obviously lost on the new manager.

Yeah I am bummed about this too, as I usually went to almost all of them,
maybe missing 2 or 3 a summer.
Its there loss, but oh well, you can't force a place to do what you want.
but I am looking at it as a blessing in disguise, as since gas is so high,
that would have been a bit of a cost for me to drive way out there every wed. this summer.

I'm not saying we're responsible for this, but some of the blame might be due to The Pyronauts being too loud.
We played there last summer on the 4th of July and lets just say it was epic! The first set that place was so packed that there were people standing on top of people trying to get drinks. So we were very loud and rocked the place. The second set started the same way, but then all of a sudden there was a mass exodus (just before fireworks time), we didn't bring our volume down quick enough... and they sent us home after the second set. It was still rad though!
Great memories of surf music and rosemary chicken quesidillas!

2 great memories out of the many many shows I saw there.
1st was 3 or 4 years back Pollo Del Mar playing "Music to watch girls go by"
while the endless line of hotties walked past the band to go to the restroom.
I said that should be the theme song for this place.
2nd was me taking a siesta on the patio while listening to the Duotones+2
and somebody posting a picture of it.
then everybody asking, how can you sleep at a surf show?
I was bummed to miss the Pyronauts fiasco.
