Would be interesting to hear what everyone got lately. Here are some recent purchases for me:
image
The Denvermen "Going Surfside with" Australian early 60s instro group. Some really good tunes but not in the same league as the Atlantics. (CD)
The Silly Surfers "The Sounds of" Great Gary Usher surf vocal novelties. (Bootleg CD)
Skaterdater "Soundtrack from the Motion Picture" Classic Davie Allan not included on any of the Sundazed reissues. (Original LP)
The Stingers "Guitars A Go-Go" Jerry Cole on the guitar. A couple of really cool insanely fuzzed out tunes and some less cool. (Original LP)
V/A "Surf's Up" Great instro comp featuring 5 tunes from the Original Surfaris not on their Sundazed CD. Also this is a different mix (with louder lead guitar) than the very similar "Surf's Up At Banzai Pipeline" comp. (Original LP)
The Eagles "Smash Hits from" British early 60s instro group sounding a bit like a cross between the Shadows and the Atlantics. (CD)

Pre-ordered the new Nebulas album and bought both Link Wray's "Jack the Ripper" and Mad 3's "Black Leather Blitz."

I'm really bad about doin mail order for cd's so I usually only buy cd's in person at stores. but it's hard to find surf cd's that I don't have allready. I did pick up the re-release of the Meshuugga Beach Party.
and 2 Arthur Lyman best of Vol. 1 and vol. 2.
also have always been wondering what Jackie Gleasons music was like.
Found a used copy of the Capitol records 2 cd comp. similar to the
Martin Denny and Les Baxter comps. all strings, not exotica, but very
moody stuff. Good dinner, make out music, for 1955, ha ha.

The Gleason stuff is pretty amazing, considering he had no musical training at all and could not read a note. He would sing his ideas for melodies and arrangements to transcribists and then control the sessions until what the orchestra was playing matched what he heard in his head. A true renaissance man.

Hmmm, I think that's the way Ozzy does it, too - is he also a renassance man?

as far as surf goes: madiera, bradipos IV, meshugga, nevermind the bolshevists.
last addition: year of the rooster by pollo - review will follow soon, but in any case, it's KILLER.

Don't let Ran hear about that, he's had it up to here with tributes.
I on the other hand would love it. Are you really doin' that or jokin'
I'd also love to hear either a tribute form one band or many bands doin' covers of great New Wave songs.

Ivan, by the way, when will your surf tribute to Iron Maiden be completed?

Very Interesting Ted, Thanks for the info.
I really like it so far, but keep falling asleep 2 songs into it. The next night I put it on track 3 and the next night track 5.
I need to listen to it, while awake. The Book that comes with it looks great too.

intrresting thought BTD - I find sometimes with the new bands, they have a touch of new wave, esp cure, in their songwriting. the infrareds for example have some very cure-inspired stuff.
usually, though, I like th originals way better then the "off-topic" covers. I thought about orderirng the way beyond the sea comp, it's fun and all, but then I thought, there's so many (proper) surf cd's I'd still rather have....
anways,

That description fits very well for mad sound scientist Joe Meek too!

Speaking of tributes, it was kind of cool a few years ago seeing The Chantays play Mr. Moto at the HB Pier show with the writer/performer Paul Johnson in the crowd. He dug it... I think there are some pics of that floating around somewhere on the net...

Right after my surf tribute to Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits.

This is funny after reading the "Favourite Surf Guitar" thread. I do have the "Brothers In Arms" album in my collection...
The most recent surf CD purchased: Lost Legends of Surf Guitar, Vol. 1: Big Noise From Waimea!. Very nicely packaged and great sound (doesn't matter that it's mono).
