check out this cool virtual model/ simulator:
stringwave

be sure to try out "oscillate" Wink

dp.
I wish I had had this when I was studing Calculus.
I had a very hard time seeing the wave patterns in my head.
This little demo would have made it much easier for me. I ended up majoring in Math, and now it is not much effort to visulise this. But back in the day it seemed a real paradox.

Thanks for the link I'll share it with others that might find it useful as well.

Thanks a lot, dp! Now I'm hooked! Very Happy

how it works: Reverb Spring, Guitar String, Sound Wave

nitpick - Well, two out of three of them.
Reverb springs and sound waves would be better visualized as longitudinal vibrations (compression & rarefaction) and not as transverse waves.

Too bad you couldn't "wiggle" one of the middle dots, with both ends fixed, for a better guitar string model.

It's still cool though.

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

Fun physics... Wheeeeeeeeeee!

dang...you're right...but, maybe you could turn your laptop on it's side?

This is awesome. I could see myself doing this in my spare time...

I am super sweet

this is cool, is there supposed to be sound?

No. The frequencies would be way to low anyway.

Ah. Then you'd have an upright bass or cello string. Razz

Perhaps write a program for an iPhone. With it's built-in accelometers you could jiggle it side-to-side and show the compression and rarefaction pulses.

Where does it go at the 'no end' window? I like boundaries. I need to know! I'm scared :paranoid:

Ah, don't be.
It appears to go to Hernandez, New Mexico, as seen in this photo by Ansel Adams:

Possibly not far from Gallup NM, which is the location of The Lost Room. Could that be a window of The Lost Room? Hmmm
Whoah. Maybe your fear is justified.

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

Thanks for the cold comfort!
Here are some windows without an ending...
