hi,are there anybody playin with a Yamaha sgv 800?I would like to nknow abouy p.u heights,and how to get a good clean sound.
At now with my twin rev,it distort easily,I wanna know if liwering the p.u will help,now gap is from 2-3 mm.
no problem with the amp with the jaguar&jazzmaster ,but too much with that yamaha.
any suggestion will be appreciate.thanx

I used to have an SGV 800 which I wound up selling to Warren (he's on this board somewhere) and it was a pretty hot guitar, I'm guessing becaues the pups are actually P-90's. My buddy that only played an Ibanez with Dimarzio 'buckers liked it--it was the only one of my guitars that he liked. So I guess trying loweing the pups. —The Mystery Men? |

I just bought an SGV800 on ebay a couple weeks ago, and took the guitar with me to a gig, with a Fillmore Mosrite copy as backup. After the first couple songs, I ditched the SGV and played out the rest of the set on the Mosrite, because frankly, the SGV's tone SUCKED, wheras after playing an hour with the Mosrite, people in the audience were telling me how great my band sounded - Since I'm the lead guitar, and very prominent in the mix, my sound really influences the overall band sound, so it looks like I'll continue to stick with the Fenders, Wilson Bros, and Mosrites. Pity, that SGV800 is SUCH a COOL-looking guitar! |

used to own one - loved the sound, hated the neck. also hated the sparkle finish, very early 80's mine didn't distort at all, but it did have higher output then my strat. one solution is to put a stompbox inbetween that lowers the output you're ending to the tank/am. another is to simply turn down the volume of the guitar, or hardwire a 'volume turned down' in the guitar cavity. (a resistor or small pot in the signal , possibly with a cap to preserve highs, would do it I guess) or sell it and get another Fender, that's what I did. WR —Rules to live by #314: |

I haven't had any complaints with the one I bought from Richard--the SGV 300 I have definitely has quieter pickups, though. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

I had a black sparkle SGV800 for a little while. I wanted so bad to have it work out cuz it looked cool, sounded great, had a nice neck, and I loved the trem. But the body shape just don't work for playing while seated, which I can't ignore. —Shawn Martin |

I have played both, and the SGV-300's PUs are definitely quieter, and the 300 has out of phase PU options which is why I chose it over the 800. The trem on these guitars is top notch, and they look boss. —

What MPoppit said. Once I get the bridge fixed on my 300 I'll probably use it more than my 800, just because the out-of-phase pickup settings sound great. I think Ferenc mentioned something on the old Yahoo group about SGVs being better rhythm guitars than lead because the bridge construction limits the sustain, but I can't remember 100%, so apologies to Ferenc if I misquoted him. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. It isn't a stock feature on the SGV 800 (I got one 2 weeks ago and I'm loving it.) It should be fairly easy to add a push pull pot or toggle switch to do it though if you really want to. |

I just bought a SGV800, in blue, on the bay. One problem though, the guy didn't have the tremolo bar for it, is there any place any of you know where I can get an arm for it? Would a Jag, Jazz or Strat arm work instead of trying to hunt down the actual arm?
What size strings can you put on it? I usually use 11's or 12's. If you feel like explaining the mod anyway, it'd be a useful piece of information. Now I just have to sit here and wait for this thing to show up. — |

wow, thread from the dead brought back to life. it's a bit difficult to explain. instead of a bar or something like that, the tremmunit has two posts to which the springs attach. - you cant put on more than two springs - the are standard fender springs if I remeber correctly. what you do is get two nails that fit right into the spring-attach-holes, bend them around a threaded bar that goes between the two posts and solder the thing together with a heavy mofo iron (50 watts or so, not your average electronics iron in any case.). et voila, you now have a bar to attach as many springs as you like to. it's a bit hard to epxlain, you'll figure it out when you get the guitar, if not Ill do you a drawing, I sold the guitar long ago. note, it's not my mod idea, I * think* Roland BEttenville thought it up but Im not sure.... —Rules to live by #314: |

Heh, dude, I was gonna bid on that guitar. I remember somebody posting a picture back on the old mailing list of the mod (or similar mod) that Wannes is talking about. I was going to do it, but I loaded it wtih 12's and it wasn't really necessary. I sold that guitar to Warren, and as far as I know he has never done the mod either. The heavy strings pull the trem up a bit, but there was still plenty of travel. It looked funny at first, but since it didn't seem to bother anything I got used to it. —The Mystery Men? |

yes standard fender springs. you'll see it when you get it. I shoudl add though that an extra spring took away much of the sensitivity and smoothness of the trem. if you use 011 rounds with it it might just work well with the stadnard two in wich case Id advise against adding one. the mod makes it possible to still use two springs though, so it's not like throwing away the option. the neck was too narrow for me. chuncky, but too narrow. a matter of taste for sure. —Rules to live by #314: |
