The Surfabilly Freakout is celebrating 2 years on the air with a raucous birthday bash featuring the Coffin Daggers and Go! Tsunami. The show will be at Mike & Molly's in Champaign, Illinois. Bands will start at 9p.
In a daredevil stunt, we will attempt to broadcast the entire show live at www.the217.com. Due to the equipment we will be using (which is normally used to broadcast hockey games), the show will be broadcast in mono...but it should be madcapped fun nonetheless.
Swing by or tune us in!!!
A bit more on the bands...
Coffin Daggers:
"The Coffin Daggers wage an all-out assault of intense instrumental madness. A horrific, apocalyptic, interstellar, psychedelic onslaught that will leave you pleading for mercy...yet begging for more!"
Go! Tsunami:
"Providing the soundtrack to a hot rod race at monster lagoon, these masked henchmen of horror are the surf-rock band to the gods...and the gods are pleased"
...who wrote the quotes, well, I did - but it is truly how I feel...from the bottom of my heart.

Man, Id love to see the coffin daggers again. one of my favorite bands. Wasn't there a story goin' around that they had personnel problems and might call it quits? Or am I hallucinating?

Yo everyone - this is tonight (May 15)!
If you are unable to make it to the show - you can celebrate with us as we stream it live! In an daredevil act of great bravery, we will be swiping the piece of equipment normally used to broadcast University of Illinois hockey games and broadcasting the whole raucous surf show live!
Tune in from 9-11pm (Central) on WPGU 107.1 FM in Champaign-Urbana, IL or as we stream it live on www.the217.com!
I know there are doubters amongst you...but isn't part of the intrigue of a daredevil stunt the possibility of fiery crash?
Tune in...and we'll do our technological best to rock your face off (in mono)!

It's a shame that such a highly regarded band gets stuck playing a shit hole like Phyllis'. I know, I have played there myself many times. Tiny stage, laughably bad sound. Clem, the owner is a total ass. Hands down one of the worst music venues in the city. Unfortunately it's one of the few places in Chicago that book surf bands. I'm surprised they couldn't get into Reggies which is a far superior venue and is surf freindly

I heard Phyllis' was trashed by some wannabe surf band called "Los Hershey Squirts". It is too bad when a nice club gets torn up by such a group!

Actually, The Hershey Squirts never played there. I was in this crappy alt. rock band that played there all the time. The thing with Phyllis' is it's the place to go when no other club will take you. I'm quite surprised that a touring band would end up there. Here is a tv clip from many years ago of my old punk band Melvin Likes Dogs playing there. The place hasn't changed a bit in 20 years! This band morphed into the Hershey Squirts when our lead singer quit. On the plus side, they do have 2 dollar Lone Star beer!

I just found a Hershey Squirts cassette and a Cocktail Preachers cassette that I think that I got on the same night at an Exotics gig in Chicago in like 97 or something. I'm trying to find a casette deck so I can listen to them. I remember that we thought that Hershey Squirts was the funniest band name ever at the time.

I have to disagree with this. Phyllis isn't the greatest club in Chicago, but the neighborhood and clientel has changed significantly with the last 5 years. Clem is an ass, but there are advantages of playing at this club. You don't have to worry about the draw at the door and anything you can get at the door from admission goes directly to the bands. You provide your own door man thats why. Don't have to work about a cut for the soundguy, the doorman, the club taking a percent off the top. There are definetly better clubs in Chicago, but there are a lot worse too.

The Nelsonics had fun playing at Phyllis' with the Cocktail Preachers a couple of years ago. The place is relatively filthy, but it is a Rock Club not a cocktail lounge. Plus we got drunk as hell.

That place definitely has a special kind of vibe. I'm just tainted from having had played there so many times. It's my musical purgatory! I just just think that a great band coming from New York could find a better place to play. Like the Abbey. Wow someone still has that old demo tape! I remember giving them out at that Exotics show! Whoa. BTW We sound way better now!

Ohmigod!! Steve!! The Ventures are playing in Chicago on SATURDAY, and this is the first we hear of it?? Why didn't any Chicago people post something in the show announcements?? I would have definitely tried to make it that show, but now it's too late. Damn....
Folks, please share info you know about surf (OK, Jeff, instro) band tours! I only found out this afternoon that the Coffin Daggers played Detroit last night and are playing Indy and Chicago this weekend. That ain't right....

The Ventures! Holy crap. How did this get past me. I had tickets to see them play at the Vic many years ago. The show was cancelled at the last minute due to poor ticket sales. I was so bummed! Thought I would never get another chance to see them. Do you know if Nokie is gonna be there?

I found out last Saturday, some guy who vends at vintage guitar shows emailed Phil. They are playing the Beverly Theater in southwest Chicago, small place with FREE parking. We got tickets Saturday morning and the box office said there was only one row of balcony(only 4 rows of balcony) and the back of main floor left. I didn't think to post it because I thought tickets would be sold out by Monday. It seems most people check the forum at work and there are barely any post on the weekend. SORRY guys. I'll give a show review, if that isn't rubbing salt in the wounds.

IvanP, I just got two tickets for the Ventures. So it may not be too late.

Thanks, Tikibot, but it's too late in the sense that I a) have other plans for this weekend, and b) can't afford a weekend trip to Chicago right now. But thanks for thinking of me!

I'd like to thank Jet Sterling for putting this together and inviting us to be a part of it. We had a great time, and look forward to playing Champain sometime again in the future. The crowd was great, and really pushed us into overdrive, Can't wait to hear the recording, I listened to a bit of the broadcast in our van while Go Tsunami were playing and thought it sounded really good. Definately a night we'll remember
