We have a couple of guest vocalists who occasionally appear and do a total of maybe 3 or 4 songs with the Eradicators-- one is in a Wolfman outfit and just howls, the other is a cute female vocalist who can actually sing & dance. Something for everybody, right?

So I don't have a big problem with a singer in principle, but I'm with Zak in having a huge problem with the notion of classic rock

I'd agree, for the most part, with the 2 band idea - Satan's Pilgrims did it a while back when they formed The Chimps (with Ted singing vocal/frat rock tunes). However, some of my favorite "surf" bands also did vocals - The Trashmen, The Untamed Youth, The Bomboras, The Volcanics, etc, etc, etc. So there is some precedent for doing both within the same band.

Don't forget "the Shadows."

Well, at the risk of causing dissension among the ranks, I sent out an email voicing my opinion regarding the addition of vocals in our band.

We have just started to gel as a band, and I'm not really interested in changing direction at this point. There is a year's worth of time and effort invested in what we have.

I hope I have not suddenly become the "bad guy".
Maybe after a few months, and two or three strong instrumental set lists down the road, I might be swayed in another direction, but for the time being, I'm pretty content with what we've got.

I hope my band mates see it the same way. Maybe I'm just being selfish. Maybe it is my own ego that prevents me from being more open. I'd like to think I don't HAVE an ego, but I suppose we ALL do to some extent.

We have a rehearsal tonight, with a new drummer. I guess that will be the point where I find out if any daggers will be thrown in my direction.

I agree that if you were to add a singer, it would develop into a battle of egos as to whether the band would do instros or vocal music. I you and/or some of your current mates are able or willing to do an occasional vocal, it might work better, especially if you limited your vocals to J&D or BB type stuff, which to many people (at least in the general public) is in the "surf" genre.

You also could maybe do something with a "guest" singer. Someone you work up a short list of songs with and who you call up on stage to sing a few of these on occasion.

I'd have a heart to heart now with your band mates. Express your concern about drifting away from the surf instro thing; find out exactly what they are intending. If they want to get away from the instro thing, then you probably will need to start looking for a new group. If that is the case, make sure you nail down details like who gets to use the current group's name, etc.

The Thunderchiefs are IMO one of the best bands at mixing traditional intrumental surf and appropriate vocal songs. And it's not really BB sound either.

Yo, tenderfoot...I just checked out some Thunderchiefs on YouTube. Unfortunately, none of the vids posted include vocals.

The addition of the member in the hula skirt wouldn't have anything to do with your assessment of them as a band, would it?

Wink

Rob_J please see this thread for some Thunderchief vocal tunes on YouTube.
