"Center Of The Universe" - The Dead Rocks
Ooh, interesting choice. I've usually really gotta be in the mood to want to listen to the Dead Rocks, but this one always does it for me. Not in my top ten, but a very cool song nonetheless. (I even just proposed it to our band as a potential cover!)

surf party- the astronauts,
firewater-the astronauts,
I've been looking for these two songs and a few others from the Rarities Album, but it looks like it's gonna run over $20 plus S & H. Anybody know if they're available for download anywhere?
They're not on iTunes or eMusic.

There are currently two new copies available for under $15 from Amazon market sellers:
http://www.amazon.com/Rarities-Astronauts/dp/B000001AY1/
The CD is great with lots of rare material from their surf period (about 2/3 of the 28 tracks) and a must have for anyone digging the Astronauts.

This post has gotten to re-listen to Jim Messina and his Jesters. I mentally dismiss them because, even though it was maybe his best work, Jim Messina refuses to acknowledge that he had any connection to these recordings (curiously, he has not done so with his Poco stuff!) I had sorta forgotten just how really good that band was.
Ten songs is hard, though, and mine are all here in this post somewhere. Except for one top-ten that I did not see:
Heartbeat - Avengers VI
Such a simple vamp, but that tune really swings, IMO.

Not true - I read an interview with him where he talks about that period quite freely. I even excerpted parts of that interview in another thread - see here - scroll down a bit.
You're probably confusing him with Glenn Frey, who when asked about it said he never played surf music. And he was right! People thought he was the Frey in Messina-Frey songwriting credits, but he wasn't. See the above thread.

Ivan: Well, I'll be. I stand corrected. I had always heard he flatly disavowed this work. And I always thought that was a shame and silly, because they were just teenagers when it was recorded.

- Lonely Girl - Ventures
- Pigmy Dance - 50 Foot Combo
- Dead Sea Stroll - Atomic Mosquitos

Been having fun reading this old thread and checking out Spotify to hear other people's lists. Here's mine, not in any order and not quite off the top of my head:
El Gato - The Chandelles
Latini'a - The Sentinals
Miserlou (Greatest Hits 61-75 version) - Dick Dale
Yang Bu - Jim Messina & the Jesters
Psyko - Laika & The Cosmonauts
With No Definite Future And No Purpose Other Than To Prevail Somehow - The Mermen
Varykino Show - The Mermen
Ultimate Wave - Eddie Day
Aunt's Invasion - Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet
Shockwave - Zorba & The Greeks
I feel like I should make a separate post for the top ten Laika & The Cosmonauts songs, maybe I'll take some time do that in a few weeks.
