Alonzo Willis wrote "King of the Surf Guitar." "Mr. Peppermint Man," too.

2 of my least favorite songs by DD,
but lets bring it back to the Ventures.
what songs do we like by them?
and what songs do we hate?
Jeff(bigtikidude)
Love anything from In Space or the Batman records, I also have a soft spot for the Swamp Rock record. Hate: The Horse, Underground Fire, Super Psychadelics, pretty much every thing after Swamp Rock.

jp,
Got to agree w/u on "the Horse." I HATED that tune! It always sounded as
though the record company accidentally "erased" the lead guitar melody, or a vocal track on that tune!!

Um. The Horse started as a great soul vocal tuned "Love is Allright" by Cliff Nobles & Co. It was really Cliff Nobles backed by the great MFSB studio musicians at the Phil LA of Soul label in Philadelphia. The Horse was the big dance craze, so the label put the same song on the b-side with the vocals removed and called it The Horse. As luck would have it, that became the hit, while the vocal version remained in obscurity. Since the Ventures covered any instrumental having any semblance of a hit, they did the Horse. As usual, it couldn't compare to the original. If you hate the original version, I'm afraid you might have a hole in your soul, Dennis.

"Journey to the Stars," "He Never Came Back," everything on Batman Theme, pretty much all the originals from '64-'67, "Caravan," "Ginchy," "Diamond Head" ... too many others to list.

I prefer their mid-sixties, crunchier Mosrite period, with one exception:
Counterpoint ('62)
War of the Satellites
The Bat
Journey to the Stars
Runnin' Wild
Ravin' Blue
Diamond Head
Slaughter on Tenth Avenue
Lonely Girl
Go-Go Slow
Night Stick/A Go-Go Dancer
Stop Action
Hot Line
Escape
Brilliant stuff.

Sorry for going off-topic, but is there a common 'favorite team' in Sackville or indeed N.B. in general?
Not that I'm aware of. I stay away from discussing religion.
Columbus has a team? I started to lose interest in hockey after the expansion beyond the Original Six teams. When the Mighty Ducks became a "real" team, I gave up altogether. It ain't fittin' for a city to have an NHL team when it doesn't have natural ice for most of the winter.
Ha, yeah, Columbus and Minnesota both entered the league in 2000, bringing the count to 30 teams total. That is indeed a far cry from the original six. I'd like to see a few less teams, too, but at the same time I'm glad there are all these cities with a passion for the game.
The Ducks have since dropped the 'Mighty' and they've put together a more respectable team, visually and talent-wise. Still, I hear what you're saying.

LOL! A hole in my soul? Nawh, to me, it just sounded like there was a "hole"
in the song, the original version or the Ventures version. It was a nice rhythm,
but no melody. However, I also wasn't aware that
this was used as a B side to a vocal version of the same Rhythm so therefore,
there WAS a vocal version. I gotta go do a little research......
Just found it on you tube....WOW!! You learn something new everyday, and that's funny
that I never heard the vocal version....never knew it existed....well, at least I was right
in my feelings, that it sounded like there was an instrument or a vocal track missing....

The Cliff Nobles song is classic, and yes, you do have a part of your soul missing if you don't like it. I think the Go Team! samples it in one of their songs, I might be wrong.

No, it DOES SOUND BETTER w/the Vocals. I just can't figure out how they could release it w/o the vocal.
I STILL do not like the Horse, which is a shame, because the rhythm of it is great. But for me, it STILL
has to have a melody, whether it be a vocal, or an instrument.

Sometimes you just gotta dig that funky rhythm. Especially if you're a member of the rhythm section. You must be a lead guitar player.

i think one of the best The Ventures-songs is "Flashback".
other songs i like is: "Innermotion Faze", "Out of limits", "He never came back", "Exploration in terror"(those cymbals in the beginning or what they are creeps me out everytime i hear the song) "a go-go dancer", "Paint It black", "Escape" i love all their Pops In Japan...

Hey, my favorite Ventures album is the one with Batman and other show songs. I bought I when it came out in the 60s, played it to death. Then bought it when it came out on CD.
My Favorite Songs:
Zocko
Jokers Wild
The Cape
Hot Line
Vampcamp
(Thanks BTD for telling me it was not VanCamp!)
I have the Venture sign my album cover last Saturday at EPCOT center!
What a hoot!
Thanks
Guy
