The Impacts' "Wipe Out" album features as much lap steel as guitar. It is a great 1st Wave released.

websurfer....your right about the soul of the Hawaiian guys, my teacher is about 75 years, was a personal friend of Jerry Byrd and Freddie Tavares, and has had a real interesting life. My band opens for their group "The Drums of Polyensia" every now and then, as well as we play togather at the Mai Kai, and these guys are amazing players. I feel really humbled when we play, its kind of like "settle down young grasshopper, you still have much to learn". Another local band "The Hoale Cats" really got me started a couple of years ago, they play a real nice blend of trad Hawaiian, and hard edged surf.

Bob Brozman is the real deal. I have a few of his CDs and love them but never had seen him play his instrument. This is a real trip: VIDEO

HOLY SMOKES!! I know some bands that don't sound as full as Brozman!!
Did he ever mention how he developed his style?...that's Awesome!

I was going to say the Impacts for steel guitar also. I love that Goldtones track on the Diggin' Out comp also Zak.

For modern day stuff, The Cocktail Preachers have lap steel on their "Exotic Moods of" CD.

I know of Todd Weger their steel player (by reputation only) and the fact that he has been posting over in the Steel Guitar Forum for years. He has posted here too, but not for a long time I think. I especially enjoyed his many stories about Dick Sanft, a great Hawaiian steel player who mentored him and who played for many years at Disney World's Polynesian Village. Todd seems like a great guy and his posts are always upbeat and helpful. It would be cool to get with him for some pointers since he knows his stuff.

Zak,
thats funny you mention the Sweet Hollywaiians.
I was gonna post a vid, and ask if you had heard of them.
and then decided not to, because they were singing so much.

Great thread!

Bill Elm is another pretty cool steel player from the band The Friends of Dean Martinez. Their early stuff is definetely more surf influenced than their current work which is more. . . post rock, almost ambient sounding.

I totally love Friends of Dean Martinez.

It's like music you would hear walking through the graveyard of a ghost town tripping on acid...

I have all their recordings. I used to play lap steel years ago, and keep dreaming about building one...like everytime I listen to FODM...
