That reminds me. I recently switched from flats to roundwounds. And I went from .12s to .11s. I'm liking the switch.

That's an early pic of Eddie he used strats in his early years of The Bel Airs and early Eddie & The Showman and occasionally he would use strats even today but as a personal friend of Eddie's he has told me he's all about Jaguars.

Nothing will do but offset Fenders and a backline of piggyback amps this is a big thing for me when I see live surf bands or see pics on the band sites, cd liner notes and see if they use Jags and Jazz yeah sure other guitars like Mosrites, Mustangs, Teles, Strats are fine and dandy but the original soul, sound and twang of surf is the Jazzmaster & Jaguar yeah I guess you can call me a purist (or "traditionalist") Wink but... this doesn't mean I won't dig a band just becuase they don't use Jaguars or Jazzmasters if the music moves me I'm hooked, you have a new fan it's all good Embarassed

you say traditionalist and purist, but your string gauge says differently!!

HAHAHAHA Stir the Pot

just messin' with ya man. your tone is spectacular regardless, so whatever yer doin' keep it up!

Hehehehe I know I know you're messin but man since day uno I have only used roundwounds 46s to 9s for all the genres I have messed with in past years to present and if I didn't tell ya everyone would assume that I was using heavy guage flatwounds but that goes to show that technique and style play a big part not the strings, amp or even the guitar that all comes last with a sweet a$$ result and tone put all together IMO, I'll let the music speak for it self that's the proof right there Twisted Evil Stir the Pot Guitar Monkey

Kyle: I agree in principle regarding the Jaguar/Jazzmaster nexus. But there has been a ton of great surf music done with a Stratocaster. Don't really like playing them myself; I am a card-carrying Stratophobe. But I am always really surprised when I find that a really killer song or guitar part was done on a Strat. I almost don't want to believe it. This has happened a lot.

You so right bro songs like these strat surfin' hits
Misirlou
Pipeline
Wipeout
Penetration
Walk Don't Run (but the lead I think was on a Jazzmaster?)
I guess the list goes on.................

HHmmm so what Jaguar Jazzmaster surfin' hits are there Stir the Pot

Thanks Kyle! For the past two years I've worked as student help for some of the copy centers on campus. I'm good and enthusiastic about what I do. So when I graduated they offered me a job to stay on and manage a new copy center they are building. On top of that they are making me in charge of digital files for the department. I'm going from student help and vaulting above all but one person in the department. Pretty sweet It is a state job and the benefits rule. Plus, it is going to give me a chance to live down near the university with my friends, which I couldn't afford as a student.

When I went from flats to round 12s on my jag within a week I had the answer to the question "Where did my calluses go?" Laughing

I've still got a couple flats on my acoustic, which is the guitar I play the most hands down. So, no callus losing for me so far.

I'm gonna throw some flats on my tele and my archtop soon, I think!

Mr. Mogwai

Hey Mogwai, where in Ontario you located?

I use flat 11 to 50, I think, on Jags, and flat 10 to 46 on Strats & Jazzmasters

I put flats on a LP Custom for a while

I tried flats for awhile, but I couldn't get used to them. I use 10's now, too, and they feel a lot better.

Strats are as traditional as they come. Dick Dale played one, the guy from the ventures played one, the guy from the surfaris played one. Strats kick ass for surf, especially with a bright amp

The Charvel Surfcaster is pretty cool. These were made in the early '90s and came in both 6 and 12 string versions. Steve, our other guitarist has a nice trans. orange 12 string that sounds incredible. I describe it as a weird rickenbacker/dano/fender offset mash-up.

I came. I saw. I left.

We have all tried the top end guitars I was wondering about the other end of the scale ,has anyone come across an entry level guitar that has Surf Vibes ie: Strat , tele,Jagmaster or any other guitars ?

Have A good Day

Rich : Cool

The old Silvertone amp-in-case guitars sound fantastic with a good set up. They have nice short, stubby necks that are very fast and that lovely Dano twang. They can still be picked up for cheap. Also vintage Harmonys like the Bobcat are also decent sleeper guitars.

I came. I saw. I left.

Of all my guitars, I use my Silvertone (Teisco) ET460/K-4L the most. You can find them at a fair price online.

Oh no you can't!....unless you consider $500-600 Dollars a fair price.... Shocked

I paid $350 for mine. It is in very good condition. It didn't need any work but a set up and a good cleaning.
