jeez, this is sg101. the poll that makes sense here is "who ownes less then 4 guitars and WHY?????"
Haha, you speak the truth Wannes.
For me the list is as follows:
1 acoustic.
1 electric.
Because I can't afford any more than that.
Does that make me an eccentric in this group?

Aaahhh, the age-old question...My fiancee asks why I have 11 guitars, when I can only play 1 at a time.
Well, here's the list:
Fender Electrics:
'97 MIM Telecaster
'02 MIM Telecaster (AV '52 pickups, 3 saddle bridge)
'06 Powerhouse Strat
'06 AV Jazzmaster- Sunburst
'05 AV Jazzmaster- Ice Blue
'05 AV Jag - Ice Blue
'07 CIJ Jazzmaster - White
'01 MIM Fretless Jazz Bass
'08 Telecaster Deluxe 1972 RI
'06 CIJ Telecaster w/Bigsby

the lonely acoustic:
Late 60's Stella Harmony
Why do I have them? I guess GAS gets the best of me. No other explanation.
My justification for it is that they DO hold their value. I could be spending money on electronics or cars, which is like throwing money in the toilet.

I think another reason some may not buy a lot of equipment is because they are beginners or not really that good. It is hard to justify spending a fortune on guitars when your skills are mediocre. It almost seems like you are trying to compensate for lack of skill by having the most expensive gear. I find that odd, but then again some might just be into collecting guitars regardless of skill level.

I've got three:
A '65 Fender Jazzmaster
An Ibanez acoustic
A firewood Kent Bass someone gave me.
I'm currently in the market for a cheap Squier so my kids will keep their hands off the JM and my wife keeps asking why I need another guitar. I can't wait to show her this thread!

Some of you guys have serious GAS...but that's okay!
Rumorsofsurf, nice pics of a very functional collection of 'music making tools".
In my previous post I did not list what I have. It is interesting to see where everyone's head is at...in a way it is a little telling of one's personality.
So here's mine:
AVRI Parts-o-caster: all Fender USA parts- 3 tone SB body, with a AVRI '57 neck and Texas Special Pus. All Fender hardware. I call it my AVRI 58 Stratocaster.
AVRI Thinskin '57 blonde
"The Ventures" Jazzmaster LE
AVRI '52 Telecaster
Stratocaster Elite signed by SRV himself (stays in the case-my only trophy guitar)
Gibson ES295 w. Bigsby '94
Gibson Les Paul Deluxe -Wine Red
Gibson Historic Korina Flying V '82
Unknown archtop from the early 60's
Hallmark Custom 60
My wife (who was a book keeper) is great at letting me know when I can indulge.

I'll have a go at this one...
I, too, am not in a band and only play at home... but you still need spares so you can play when one's in the shop, one's in bits, etc...
Those that I have, in order of (current) frequency of use:
- Squier Affinity Stratocaster in Brown Sunburst (main one)
- Squier Bullet Stratocaster in Saphire Blue (I think it is) (to pull apart, rewire, hack)
- Monterey Vintage Replica '50s Stratocaster in Surf Green (I do like the green)
- Wayne Les Paul Custom in Black (my original 'Black Beauty' from ~1972 or something)
Those that I want:
- Some 'standard' (non-dreadnought.. I think) steel string acoustic (I need an acoustic)
- Les Paul Standard (or Custom?) in (Fiddleback) Light (or Iced Tea) Sunburst (I still have the poster of this guitar from 1982's 'Guitar Player' up on my wall)
- Fender Stratocaster (standard or something yet to be determined - I still want a REAL Strat )
So that comes to 4 in the house now, ultimately maybe 7 ...but that's only a starting point - you can never have too many

I think it's just natural that as you get older you suffer from gas.

Very true. I buy quality guitars and amps in part hoping that will improve my playing, and because they inspire me to practice. Granted, the money probably would be better spent on lessons.
My dad's mentor, jazz great George Van Eps owned two guitars. He saw them as tools. During recording sessions, he sometimes would put a plastic twist-off wine cork in one of the "f" holes on his Gretch 7-string, and then turn it until the sound technician would give him the thumbs-up. This 1979 clip is the only youtube video I could find of Van Eps:

I bought a new strat so I didn't have to use my old strat for shows in sketchy surroundings, The Two Double-necks are also tools for the band.
I bought a 1960 double cutaway les paul special with the finish striped off, because I have always wanted one and I knew I would never find another at that price.
The same with my 1937 Gibson L50 Archtop. Except it is in excellent condition.
I bought a 2004 Santa Cruz Vintage Jumbo Acoustic. I play an acoustic most often because my family will complain with my Deluxe reverb on 1. But mostly because I wanted a lifetime acoustic that would inspire me. Hands down the best piece of equipment I have ever owned. That guitar is so inspirational to play it actually improved my playing.
I usually factor in re-sell in guitar decisions, if I have to sell it, I want to get at least what I paid for it.

I'm sure that there's a lot of truth to that but one should never generalize. When I made my living as a player and a teacher I owned 2 guitars, a Gibson Johnny Smith and a Classical. I eventually bought a Les Paul Special and it really helped me to become more versatile.
Nearly 30 years later my collection seems to hover at just over a dozen guitars. What's the difference? Simply the fact that I can afford them. In many ways I probably play better now than when I was doing it for a living, I'm more relaxed and a lot more experienced. I certainly enjoy it more than I did back in the day when music == work.
Sometimes I look at my guitars and wonder why I keep all of them. I tend to gravitate to just a small handful among the 14 I currently own. Still, all of them have their place for one reason or another. Some, such as my baritone, are unique instruments that serve a limited purpose. Others, such as my Gretsches, are variations of the same basic recipe. I don't have them because of some endless "tone chase". I'm not trying to nail some artist's sound dead on the money, I only care that I am getting a sound that works for me.

Don't tell my mother, she thinks I play piano in a cat house.
I've done a bit of programming but I'm more of a network dude. I spend most of my time prowling the Cisco world or fighting with an Exchange server.
And you Ruhar?

Cool! I've played with J script and VB script but that's about as far as it goes. My next "programming project", if you could call it that, is to get to know Powershell. Windows server environments are relying on it more and more, especially Exchange server.

I buy quality because I can "mostly" afford it. It also inspires me to practise more and become a better player.
I too am involved in the IT world...supposed to do more along the lines of desktop support on the client end, but more and more I am cornered into the application specialist category handling the technology for 3 call centers...most days I go home with an ice cream headache.

Up until about 5 years ago most of my guitars were fairly inexpensive, except for my archtop. Then I decided to hold off on buying anything that wasn't of at least mid-level quality. The MIJ Gretsches I've bought over the last few years are really about ideal for my tastes. My Am Dlx Strat was worth every dime that I paid for it as well.
