Aaahhh, the age-old question...My fiancee asks why I have 11 guitars, when I can only play 1 at a time.

Why do I have them? I guess GAS gets the best of me. No other explanation.

My justification for it is that they DO hold their value. I could be spending money on electronics or cars, which is like throwing money in the toilet.

Because I can't afford any more than that.

I think another reason some may not buy a lot of equipment is because they are beginners or not really that good. It is hard to justify spending a fortune on guitars when your skills are mediocre. It almost seems like you are trying to compensate for lack of skill by having the most expensive gear. I find that odd, but then again some might just be into collecting guitars regardless of skill level.

In my previous post I did not list what I have. It is interesting to see where everyone's head is at...in a way it is a little telling of one's personality.
So here's mine:
AVRI Parts-o-caster: all Fender USA parts- 3 tone SB body, with a AVRI '57 neck and Texas Special Pus. All Fender hardware. I call it my AVRI 58 Stratocaster.

I'm sure that there's a lot of truth to that but one should never generalize. When I made my living as a player and a teacher I owned 2 guitars, a Gibson Johnny Smith and a Classical. I eventually bought a Les Paul Special and it really helped me to become more versatile.

Nearly 30 years later my collection seems to hover at just over a dozen guitars. What's the difference? Simply the fact that I can afford them. In many ways I probably play better now than when I was doing it for a living, I'm more relaxed and a lot more experienced. I certainly enjoy it more than I did back in the day when music == work.

Sometimes I look at my guitars and wonder why I keep all of them. I tend to gravitate to just a small handful among the 14 I currently own. Still, all of them have their place for one reason or another. Some, such as my baritone, are unique instruments that serve a limited purpose. Others, such as my Gretsches, are variations of the same basic recipe. I don't have them because of some endless "tone chase". I'm not trying to nail some artist's sound dead on the money, I only care that I am getting a sound that works for me.

Cool! I've played with J script and VB script but that's about as far as it goes. My next "programming project", if you could call it that, is to get to know Powershell. Windows server environments are relying on it more and more, especially Exchange server.

I buy quality because I can "mostly" afford it. It also inspires me to practise more and become a better player.

Up until about 5 years ago most of my guitars were fairly inexpensive, except for my archtop. Then I decided to hold off on buying anything that wasn't of at least mid-level quality. The MIJ Gretsches I've bought over the last few years are really about ideal for my tastes. My Am Dlx Strat was worth every dime that I paid for it as well.
