I thought that I had a problem, but looking at some of these other posts, I may only have an average collection. I've actually unloaded a few guitars and a bass recently. At this time I have 14 guitars (Electric and Acoustic), 3 Electric Basses and 1 Upright Bass.

3 electric basses
3 electric guitars
1 electric/acoustic classical guitar
1 electric mandolin
1 electric/acoustic cardboard box upright bass
my explanation: I am basically a bass-player who digs surf guitar...so, I have a fretted, a fretless and a six-stringbass . In the surf guitar department, i have a loud, mellow and jangle-y guitars. I like all the different sounds that the different instruments make.

There was a time a while back when I owned three guitars. I felt guilty, for whatever reason, so I sold two. I've always been one to get rid of things that I don't use constantly, though. I dislike clutter, and I can only play one at a time anyway, so I just go with the one that sounds best, then trade it in for another if I want a different sound or feel. Right now I just have one guitar: a 12-string Alvarez acoustic. I admit, though, I'll most likely hang on to this one when I get my next electric. I've never owned an acoustic before, and I'll be using it for all of the non-surf music I play.

A total of 18 guitars, and 10 amps to choose from. No effects, yet, except what's available on the Line6 POD's and the Peavey TransTube combo. I only really need a handful of effects, with an external Fender Reverb unit included in my list, so I'll take my time in finding just the right one, for the other four. I don't yet have an electric 12-string or lap steel, and I'm at the point of starting to consider other stringed instruments (banjo, fiddle, etc.).

I have 5 guitars and 3 tube amps: two Fender solid body electrics, two vintage Gibsons arch bodies; one Ibanez "lawsuit" guitar , a Gomez Reverb, 66 Bandmaster, 68 Bandmaster converted to showman specs,
Why?
It's the same with surfboards and guns: "I have more than I need but not as many as I want."
I'm still only a bedroom picker, and a crappy one at that, so the good stuff is wasted on me.
My wife is suggesting therapy.

Looks like I need to start buying surf boards as I think that is some of the most honest logic I have heard in a LONG time!!

I have a lot of guitars... On the surf-side, though, I have a couple of vintage Mosrite Ventures, an AVRI Jazzmaster, a MIJ Jaguar, a few old Danelectros, a few different Stratocasters, a Yamaha SGV, and a couple of Fender Mustangs (1960's and a recent CIJ). I've had many other Jazzmasters that I've since sold (oh, well), and I still love the old European and Japanese guitars from the 1960's with all the switches and knobs.
It's a passion and a curse. When I was a kid, I'd get my mom to take me to the pawn shops so that I could eye up all the cool guitars, and at the time, a lot of the new wave/ punk rock players were playing instruments that many players had written off by that time as "dated" (Jazzmasters, Jaguars), "cheap" (Mustangs, LP Juniors and Specials), or just plain "cheesy" (Vox, etc.)- things you could find in pawn shops when you were on a budget. I was bitten by the bug early on, and I guess I never quite recovered.
I still buy guitars when I find the occasional deal that's too good to pass up, but now, there's just nothing I'm really actively looking for except a Chandler Avenger. One day I'll find one... One day...

When I told her that for the cost of therapy, I could buy a new guitar, she said that the type of therapy she had in mind came at the end of a baseball bat.

Let's see, I have...
Fender Prodigy (I keep it because it was my first electric)
Fender 40th Anniversary Stratocaster (My first "good" guitar)
Bastard Fender Jazzmaster (parts of it date back to 1959)
'50-something Fender Champ lap steel (one day I'll learn to play it properly)
'50s or '60s Harmony classical (belonged to my mother, so now its a family heirloom)
National-style resonator (that I built from a kit from Stewart-Macdonald)
Cheapo SX Jazz Bass copy
Why so many? Because I like them and they all do different things.
