Permalink How would you feel about bands covering your songs?

To the guys here in bands, how would you feel if another group wanted to cover your song. with and without notifying you. Live or in the studio.

It seems like back in the day, anyone who wrote a kick ass surf song may as well let every surf band use it. like it or not.

Unless I am way off ( I don't know nearly as much about the genre as most of you guys) it seems like bands cover strictly the oldies. Why not cover songs from other bands that are out there right now?

Sorry this seems like multiple questions for one thread. I am just curious about how people in bands feel about this subject.

if my fuzzy unsteady memory serves me correctly, VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB has played their cover version of THE ATOMIC MOSQUITOS' 'LOVE CANAL' LIVE at a show at one of my SURF-ROCK SHINDIGs....

and, THE ATOMIC MOSQUITOS were also on the bill that night, and still in the house when VENICE BEACH played the tune

I recall that that THE ATOMIC MOSQUITOS were very moved, flattered, and impressed with the whole experience

anyone from the ATOMIC MOSQUITOS reading this....perhaps you can verify this, or perhaps, correct my recollection? and maybe add your feelings, thoughts?

It's really cool. And it is interesting to hear someone else' take on your song. They will emphasize different parts. and put a new spin on it.

The Nebulas have covered Satan's Pilgrims & The Ghastly Ones. Live the Nebulas have played Red Sunrise by the Space Cossacks and Redlined by The Penetrators.

Pollo del Mar covers Slacktone's Bells of St Kahuna live.

The Madeira cover Treblespankers and Surf Coasters.

I think a lot of modern bands have covered each other. I think it's awesome. Any more examples?

oh yeah, forgot; Brian's post reminds me.....

MISTER NEUTRON have covered SLACKTONE as well, and did so when both bands were at ASBURY LANES (last year I believe); I believe SLACKTONE was pretty impressed

I agree with that. Plus it's flattering if someone likes your song enough to work it out and do it. As long as credit is given where it's due I don't see any problem. We do mostly originals, but we do Pacifica just because I really like the tune.

Youth and enthusiasm are no match for age and treachery.

Pacifica is one of those songs that doesn't seem hard, but playing it perfect isn't easy at all, getting it right is really rewarding.

I have a song that is made for jamming, It's on our site, called surf coaster, the person who does the next solo gets a quote before it's time to let er rip... I hope to have guests sit in on that song someday...

here it is... you'll get the idea:

The Deoras, (Mike Palms surf band)
covers a Hillbilly soul surfers song, a few Halibuts songs,
The Insect Surfers' "Polaris" 2 Surf Coasters songs, and a SMOASP song.
off the top of my head.

Outterwave does a few Los Straitjackets songs,
and a song or 2 by John and the Nightriders.

I think that by playing another band's song you show them great respect, and I they cover yours, it's very flattering.

And to answer one of the questions you didn't ask, a band is under no obligation to to ask for permission to cover another bands song. If they release it, they have to pay songwriter royalties. But, you can't tell another band to stop playing your song.

I would be extremely flattered if another band played or recorded one of our songs. Very Happy

We've certainly covered a bunch of other bands' stuff over the years!

I agree that the appropriate mechanical license fee should be paid to the songwriter if the song is recorded for a project that will be sold to the public.

We have been contacted by other bands a couple of times, asking us if they can cover one of our songs and felt really flattered about it.

In the Daytonas we recorded and released "Geronimo" by Jon and the Nightriders and "Surf Raider" by the Surf Raiders.

We used to play Urban Surf Kings song "Radarmen From The Moon", which is a fantastic surfsong! We also played The Mariners version of Lamento A Go Go, which is a much better version i think than the original.
A song i love and really would like to cover is Impact Zone by North Of Malibu..

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

A British instrumental band called "The Vortons" requested and received permission to cover the first surf tune I ever wrote, "High Plains Surfer". I was certainly blown away by that and flattered that somebody out there really liked it enough to cover it.

My duet, the Sea Hunters, cover Slacktone, Aqua Velvets, Los Straitjackets, The Kilaueas, The Razorblades, The Torquays, Laika & the Cosmonauts, Bambi Molesters, Jon & the Nightriders. I want to cover some Meshugga Beach Party too but I think most of those are already covers. I'm thinking of an SG101 tribute, covering songs from the SG101 compilation!

I had had a few Zombies by that point, but yeah I think I remember it.
I recall we had to twist their arms a bit to play it, but they did it and it was totally cool!!

we cover Sayans Pilgrims Boss Bsa...
On the other hand there is a band called the Beach Brakers
that covers our El impostor & we felt flattered

i think in surf music its kind of the music's culture to cover other bands material. Standards or not things shouldn't be any different then they were "back in the day"
