SurfBoy
I played the same black Super Reverb for 30 years, all styles, and fed myself with it six nights a week steadily.

I was rereading this and saw this line and had to comment. I never approached six nights a week, but believe it or not kids, by busting our asses and knocking on doors and being generally pushy, there was a time when you could nail 2 to 3 gigs a week... Not in L.A., but probably most places. I understand that's not the case these days Laughing

Sorry about the paragraphing, new computer, site, and software to me.

Yes, I use a tank. One white 64 Fender and two Soldano Surf Boxes.

Yes, I worked full time 6-7 nights a week for 30 of my playing years, and somewhat less for the other 18 years. This is accomplished by starting to play rock jobs at 11, going to music school, and then taking whatever jobs pay to keep you playing whether you "like" the music or not. That is good for your chops, expanding your tastes, and increasing the musical toolchest you can take to your chosen passion.

Yes, I have a lot of gear, aquired by and for working music jobs. I never made a huge amount of salary, but spent it wisely on good gear, and mostly got to play a real real lot.

Now I can play what I want, when I want. Even surf music, which even in the early sixties, was never a "chick magnet", a big earner, or popular with most bandmates.

300 gigs a year... For 30 years... Starting at 11 no less! You make James Brown your Bitch!!!!!!!!

2 soldanos? Are they that unreliable?

There's an old hollywood story about Milton Burl and his legendary manhood. Seems some of the young turks didn't believe the stories so they challenged him to a size contest. The first guy pulled it out, and truly it was astonishing. The second larger still. Finally it was Uncle Milty's turn, he starts taking it out, and after it was clear he was going to win, one of the witnesses said "Please Milt! Only show enough to win!" In the future you should probably follow that advice as well...

P.S. You don't make paragraphs by hitting "submit" you make them by hitting the "enter" button on the keyboard.

Surfboy, would you start another thread on this subject? I'm sure a lot of us youngins here would like to hear about being a musician in the early 60's. Were you based in one geographical region or did you travel around the country? What kinds of music competed with surf in the early 60's P.B.(pre-beatles)?

Idea most of us old guys are near deaf anyway----try a boss dd-3. its versatile, reliable and cheap. just my opinion. ..............6 nites a week? man, why?

If warm/analog sounding slap back echo is what you need, the Carl Martin Red Repeat is fantastic. Set the first two knobs at 12:00 and the second two knobs at 7:00 (basically, as low as they go). That'll give you a great starting point for Sun rockabilly echo.

I experience real good results using the Carl Martin Red Repeat. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it does a great job for my needs. In the past I used a Boss Digital Delay for years and years...The Boss had a real "early U2/Edge" sort of sound to it...

Idea hey dp-----you switched to the red repeat?? from the boss? i'm going down to gc tonight and check one out. if you switched, i want to find out why! i know c martin makes good stuff so i think i'll fbi around and see what's up! Exclamation

For years I used a Visual Sound H2O...switched to a Fulltone tape echo for about a year but now use an Electro-Harmonix Memory Man which has proved to be the best for me at least as it has a great sound and I can make changes easily on the fly..

Cool back from gc. the carl martin red repeater is very nice. warm sounding not sterile like a boss dd-3. not as much delay time as the boss but i think it is the better delay pedal. definitely looks cooler and the price is still nice! ok, so get it instead!!

yep...seems like you have an accurate assessment here, frisbee...the dd-3 is a cool pedal, but maybe a bit "sterile". "80's" (U2)...very definitely a "digital-sounding" pedal...the dd-3 does have a longer delay time...

the Carl Martin Red Repeat is more of an analog emulator sort of delay. Not as much delay duration as the dd-3...I think the Red Repeat offers up to 600ms of delay...so 1/2 second or so...i prefer the the way the Red Repeat sounds, and I dig how the four-knob setup provides ample opportunity to tweak settings...and it is all in a neato red metal box...

Two new pedals on the market that I've been trying to get user reviews on. The Carl Martin EchoTone and the MXR Carbon Copy. Both sound very interesting, but they're just barely on the market. Anyone here have any info besides what their websites say?

CUTBACK

I ve seen the carl martin echotone and it looks gorgeous, but will be quite expensive, I think I saw 250-ish somewhere...

I like the tap feature and built-in effects loop. (But had a feeling it would be pricey.) I'll wait for some user reviews on Harmony Central.

Line 6 Echo Park does a nice tape delay simulation. Or for $40 get the Behringer clone (Echo Machine)

My 30 year old used Boss DD-3 quit on me last week. What a rip off, I won't get another one of those! I got an MXR Carbon Copy for about $125 and I'm very happy with it.

I recently got the TC Electronics Flashback Delay and LOVE it. There isn't much it won't cover and it has a looper.
