Back on topic, The Pyronauts' "Ironboard" is based on the opening theme from the 60's Alfred Hitchcock TV show.
Right...both based on "Funeral March of a Marionette" by Gounod.
Last weekend I caught the movie "M" on IFC. It's a great movie from 1931 about a child murderer on the loose in Berlin, the search for him, and his capture (apparently a true story). Highly recommended. Anyway, the villain frequently whistled the melody from "In the Hall of the Mountain King" and it's been stuck in my head all week. I think it would make a great surf-ish instrumental.

Don, look no further than your friends in Pollo Del Mar to hear it. It's on Golden State I believe. Surely you must have heard it at one of the Hotel Utah shows.

The Bitch Boys also cover "Mountain King". Some obscure 60's surf band also covers it, it is on my iPod somewhere, but I think they used a different name for it because I am having trouble finding it at the moment.

A quick search of Reverb Central reveals that "Nero & The Gladiators" and "The Avengers VI" also did "In the Hall..."
Edit:
Nero & The Gladiators apparently were a Britsh band (not surf). I think I am thinking of the Avengers VI from "Real Cool Hits".

DOH! Well, at least it was a good idea, if a little late. I don't have Golden State or any Bitch Boys yet. I'm about to order another batch of CDs so I'll check it out. Now I want to hear Pollo's version...if they played it at one of the Hotel Utah shows I've been to, it went completely over my head...or I was concentrating on my beer or something.
Thanks guys!

Don, while you're at it get Pollo's album Year of the Rooster! The version of Hall of the Mountain King on there is great!
I don't have this on hand, but if I remember correctly I think the Bitch Boys' version is based on the cut the Landcasters did called "Satan's Holiday" which is on the Rare West Coast Surf Instrumentals comp. Then again, I'm kinda assuming. I haven't heard the Gladiators or Avengers IV versions so maybe one of those was the inspiration for the Bitch Boys/Landcasters.
Also the Who did it if we want to count that.
Hmm, as it turns out there are plenty versions to choose from.

We do an surf intrumental version of hard days night. The crowd really seems to enjoy it. It seem a little odd since the british invasion did so much to displace surf music.

Forgot to mention that that is Ritchie Blackmore on guitar in The Lancasters.

I once saw two bands play instro versions of Paint It Black on the same day. First of all Da Surfones from Barcelona, later on Cosmonauti. Funilly emough, I'm pretty sure the Bitch Boys (mentioned as playing this tune earlier in the thread) were in the audience for the first show (I think so, anyway). We now play this tune in Los Fantasticos. We have also been known to play Roger Whittaker's Mexican Whistler, Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out Of My Head and Rossini's William Tell Overture (although that's been done by loads of people, I would guess).

Cordelia Records issued a full CD of non-surf music turned into instrumental surf songs: "Beyond The Sea - The Surf Instrumental Bands Of The World Fearlessly Extend Their Repertoire".
You can see the tracklisting here:
Cordelia Records - Beyond The Sea
26 very cool songs ranging from 10cc, A-Ha, Serge Gainsborg, Pink Floyd, Neil Young, Queen, Elvis, among many others! The webpage also includes info on how to buy the record and has 7 bonus mp3s for free.
The Cordelia label is preparing a second volume of this series: "Further Beyond The Sea". Bands interested in being part of the CD should write to Alan Jenkins:
Further Beyond The Sea
Surfadelica, my band, recorded a version of the Kaiser Chiefs "The Modern Way".
We also recorded "Why Don't We Do It In The Road" by the Beatles for a forthcoming "White Album Tribute".

Haven't attempted these yet but we're gonna try them out tonight:
Foggy Mountain Breakdown
How did that work out for you? Does a whammy bar provide a reasonable facsimile of the Scruggs Tuners aka "Keith Banjo Tuners"? (Maybe I'm thinking of "Flint Hill Special", that makes use of the Scruggs Tuners.)

Has any body said "Dreaming" by Blondie, awsome drums, nice melody etc.. also "11:59" or "Atomic" would be good.
I was thinking about trying their "Angels On the Balcony" - with lots of jangly ringing arpeggios, bendy/tremmy notes and such.
— I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.
