I am working with OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD and the great people of MAKE MUSIC NEW YORK to put together a surf rock lover's delight on June 21 2008.
www.ottosshrunkenhead.com
http://www.makemusicny.org/
As everyone knows, June 21st is the 'official' first day of Summer. It's also the longest day of the year, I believe? So I came up with the unsteady title of LONG DAY'S (SURFIN') SAFARI INTO NIGHT, and I will elaborate further in a moment.
I remind everyone that I am also doing a 7-surf-band extravaganza at OTTO's for the "unofficial" start of summer over Memorial Day weekend. That event has its own separate thread, and that event is called A SURFIN' SUMMER KICK-OFF, featuring in order from 6 pm on, The TarantinosNYC, The Outpatients, The Octomen, The 9th Wave, The Atomic Mosquitos, The Madeira, and The Coffin Daggers (whew!!).
For June 21, MAKE MUSIC NEW YORK works hard at presenting LIVE FREE MUSIC all through NYC's 5 boroughs. Originally I was going to do this on the CONEY ISLAND boardwalk, but the infamous MERMAID PARADE is there that very day, which will shut down traffic and cause me problems getting the bands in and out of there. Other issues too arose, but I won't elaborate. The vibe wasn't quite right.
So I took the idea to OTTO's, and here's how it's gonna work. At 2 pm, and every hour on the hour, ending at 8 pm prompt, 6 SURF BANDS will perform OUTSIDE the club LIVE for the people passing by East 14th Street. The bar will be open!! Then at 8 pm, we go inside for 6 more live surf instro bands, the last one goes on at 1 am.
SO, DOES IT GET BETTER, MY SURF-ROCK FRIENDS, then 12 bands in 12 hours? Man, I am very excited about this.
So, this is an OPEN CALL to ALL INSTRUMENTAL SURF BANDS who want a shot at this. I have to fill these 12 hours quickly (3 hours are gone already).
Special thanks to MARBLE MAHONEY of STRANGE BUT SURF for supplying a P.A. for outside the club. His band will be the last outdoors band, 7 pm. Prior to that, MISTER NEUTRON has confirmed for 6 pm, and I have a hold on 5 pm for THE OCTOMEN.
Of course, if it rains, this is all moot, we move the whole thing indoors. I need permits only for the outdoor portion of the show (2-8 pm).
With love, deep reverb, and wet twang,

one other thing:
THE CRUSTACEANS have just confirmed they will take the 2 pm OUTDOOR slot, which is the first band to kick this 12 HOUR MARATHON off
that means only ONE OUTDOOR time slot remains open: 3 PM
any takers?
thx to Dave Riordan of THE CRUSTACEANS who checked in from Bangor, Maine just now

Hey Un/F....
That would be alot of fun, but right now I have a "hold" on that entire weekend for a show out of town with The Rip Chords. If that falls through, I may just show up, but it would have to be an unplanned thing, since I really won't know if I can make it to NYC until the last minute. It would be fun just to come and hang out with you all day, and listen to the bands! I'll let you know my plans off line.
Thanks buddy.

there is one more opening to my 12 bands in 12 hours extravaganza at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD on June 21st
that slot is the last one.....1 a.m.
I will leave this open thru this SUNDAY APRIL 27th
if no one grabs this while it's still available, tell you what I am gonna propose
starting st 1 am or thereabouts, how about a 'SURF-BEAT JAM' ??
yeah, I will invite any and all surf musicians who are still on the premises to have some fun, kick out the twangin' jams
while I am waiting for a band to possibly sign on, wonder how this sounds to the surf community who is taking part in this event?
or not taking part, but will be in NYC on June 21?
feedback....please!
thx again for all the support and enthusiasm

it's probably in everyone's best interests to include the date of the event on the poster, or so I am told
forgive my knuckleheadedness

just getting the word from MAKE MUSIC N.Y. that the local police precinct in which OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD is located is REFUSING to issue the appropriate SOUND PERMITS to allow the "outdoor" portion of this show to go forward
I have reached out to all 6 bands that were scheduled to play OUTSIDE to see if they are willing to move their sets INDOORS...and we'll do what we can to draw people in to the club for the 12-Hour Marathon -- once all 6 bands have responded, I will re-post that information here
I am also waiting to hear from OTTO's to ensure 100% that they are willing to work with me for 12 straight hours of non-stop instrumental surf inside the club
as they say, "that's showbiz"
and sometimes showbiz sucks
thanks to everyone involved for their support and enthusiasm

as stated in the previous post, I have re-vamped this show
it is cut back to 8 hours/8 bands, instead of the original 12 hour marathon, which would have included outdoor performances for 6 of those hours
I am going to re-work this as a 'special edition' of my SURF-ROCK SHINDIG series
thus I will abandon this thread, and re-post an updated poster with the bands line-up and stage times, probably w/i 48 hours in the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG thread
note: this is the same day as THE MERMAID PARADE in CONEY ISLAND in the afternoon, and I am hopeful that OTTO's (who have a float in the parade) can spread the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG gospel during the Parade
so, for those monitoring this, keep your eyes on the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG thread, going forward
shame we were not able to play this music for the masses on the streets...it would have gone down well, and drew a huge crowd, all afternoon
c'est la vie, eh?
