James Calvin Wilsey had an earlier MySpace site called TheMysteriesLA I found it a couple of years ago when I was trying to track him down. He had some early home recorded versions of songs that ended up on his recent CD that was just released. I think that's all that was recorded or produced from that project. He discussed it a bit on some bulletin board posts. He posts as WickedGTR over on the Telecaster Discussion Pages Reissue. |

I had a listen to the music on the myspace web site. It's excellent. So I just ordered the CD. |

Jimmy Wilsey sent this message to a member of the Shadow Music forum (for the fans of the Shadows) who in turn posted it on that forum, and I thought it was very cool, so I'm posting it here: "I discovered the Shadows in the early 80's- as most of you know they weren't well known in the states - especially then. I discovered the 'real' version of Apache on a compilation album- it was so much better that the other versions I had heard. I sought out more information and records by the Shadows. In the pre-internet era, that wasn't very easy. I also found a bunch of Cliff and the Shadows, stuff- amazing The Shadows music and Hank's guitar sounded a lot like what I was trying to achieve, but they had already done it, and better, many years before. Hanks guitar had a range of subtlety and an emotional quality that I never heard in, say, the Ventures... to me it was a whole different thing. I don't think I ever really 'copied' Hank's style, I was already using the same guitar (Stratocaster) with the vibrato and a clean sound with echo and reverb- but the power and beauty of the melody in the music they made was an affirmation to me that I was heading in the right direction, and I never looked back. The Shadows have continued to inspire me ever since. It's funny- after the first Chris Isaak album came out, the very first fan letter we got via the record company said 'it reminded them of Cliff and the boys' - we were floored that they made the connection. I had always wanted to make an instrumental album, and finally made "El Dorado", just recently released. While it is a homage to the instrumental pioneers that influenced me, I wanted it to sound like a contemporary record- not like something that could have been released 40 years ago. If any Shadows fans like it, that is the highest compliment. Thanks again Andrew, and cheers to all of the Shadows fans around the world - I am one of you. Cheers - http://groups.msn.com/ShadowMusic/people.msnw?action=get_message&mview=&ID_Message=223000 —Ivan |

I got a copy of the new CD and its good. Really mood stuff, not big on melody but you can tell there is some Shadows influence in there. |

I bought ElDorado and I just gotta say, this is what the guitar is supposed to sound like. It's great stuff, as SteveMartini said, it's mood stuff, very haunting and evocative, definitely something I'd like to have on my own pallette. —The artist formerly known as: Synchro When Surf Guitar is outlawed only outlaws will play Surf Guitar. |

Gave a listen to the CD last night. The thing that hit me the most was the incredible low end that he gets out of his strat. There is this one note that is detuned down to flop. The overall sound of the recording is really nice, very simplistic tunes, based around tons of tone. — |

Here's a bump to this thread, inspired by Robbie's Superstar video post. I'd recommend that everyone run out and grab a copy of El Dorado immediately, but as far as I know, Jimmy's kinda fallen off the map the last few years. Does anyone have a way of contacting him? Quick update...Amazon actually still has 9 of these puppies left in stock! Please, do yourself a favor and order a copy while you still can! —Insect Surfers Last edited: Sep 21, 2011 16:47:58 |

He posts on the Telecaster forum all the time. I've never met him, but he seems super nice. His posts a lot of really informative stuff on guitars, recording, and his prior stints with Chris Isaak and the Avengers. And, like Isaak, he's really funny. He's one of my all-time favorite guitarists. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/members/wickedgtr.html —Sean Last edited: Sep 21, 2011 22:33:32 |

Thanks for this Johnpaul & Robbie! Now that the sunshine fun times of summer are largely past, my ears are coming back around to the mellow stuff. Just put this in my 'mzon shopping cart. While I was at it, I clicked over to CD Baby and finally shelled out some greenbacks for that Vanduras release I've been meaning to grab for a while now too. —Fady |
