Permalink choose your organ: keyboards and surf

Do you like keyboard with your surf?
Organ?
Piano?
Synth?

Harpsichord? Hmmm

Bring on the organ, as long as it's a tasteful addition that complements the guitars.

Just one listen to Laika & The Cosmonauts and you can see how a well done organ player can compliment this music.

Good topic!

Being a keyboarder myself I would either go for the Farfisa or a more modern synthesizer which can emulate the organs, pianos and also do synth stuff.
Many bands have proven that it is not the instrument that makes the music, it is the music itself. "Wall of Voodoo" did western stuff using synths, soundtrack composers do classical stuff using synths, "Big Country" did bagpipes using guitars. I bet there are people somewhere who play surfmusic on Moog-synthesizers ;).

I'm one who's been playing keyboards AND guitar, off and on, for 30+ years... albeit, predominantly only at home... (and only taking guitar lessons for a year-plus) but I think it depends on the sound you're after. There are some tunes that benefit from an organ-type sound...

In short, I think it's always worth trying your tune with a keyboard track Smile

I'm as free from money as a frog is from feathers

Organs can rock as heard by bands such as Satan's Pilgrims, Ghastly Ones, Bomboras, The Mummies, etc... It neither adds nor takes away just by virtue of being there, it's how and what is played that makes the difference.

Oh, I forgot to answer the question completely... .
Like ozboomer and MadScientist I think a song can benefit by the use of keyboards (or any possible other instruments). But nevertheless I do not really care for keyboards being used in surf music

I really like keyboards with my surf. I usually emulate some of the classic sounds: Hammond, Moog, Wurlitzer, Rhodes, and Combo...I've never really tried to play piano yet...

right now, I'm real big on experimenting with arpeggiators and old-time Moog sounds...but, I' using the MikroKorg, a modern digital analog emulation synth....

For an example of how synths can be used in surf music, check out
my demo called "Bombora!/Death at Mavericks," which is located here:

It's the third or fourth demo down, I think.

I'm using two keyboards:
--Ensoniq ASR-10 (sampler), for the piano and organ sounds
--Ensoniq FIZMO (synthesizer) for the "spacey" synth sounds

Hmm. . . . Confused Are you logged in? (Then again, you wouldn't be able
to post if you weren't, huh?)

Well, just go to the downloads link at the top of the home page, and
go to user demos. You SHOULD be able to access it for there.

Ah, there it is. Sounds good!

I've always liked small doses of organ with my surf music, if tastefully done. I think Farfisa seems to go better with surf than Vox, although I liked my Vox Jaguar better for other 60's rock than my Farfisa Compact. Nowadays, I keep a EMU Vintage Keys around. It has about 15 voices for older organs, including one called "Old Red Top." As for other organs, I seem to recall The Blue Hawaiians getting a Hammond sound with their music.

farfisa and monophonic synthesizers. moog and arp types.

i've never heard a fender rhodes in surf, but i'm working on a song with a kinda fake rhodes sound and i'm liking it. though it's a very slow song.

Farfisa for surf but for every other occaision a Hammond

Storm Surge of Reverb: Surf & Instro Radio

My friend who used to play sax in Impala bought a Fender Rhodes to fix up. I said "just think, when you get done with it, you can play the "Theme From Taxi"."

Wurlitzer is the original surf keyboard (Pipeline), after that I like Vox Jaguar, Hammond M or B-3, and Farfisa.

Ted, what Vox do the Pilgims use? Continental? I don't remember the look of it very well... I assume you like the Wurlitzer over the Rhodes. I completely agree.

My personal favorite is either the Jaguar or Farfisa compact. Our key player owns two Farfisas and two Jaguars. All sound better than the other on certain days.

No, I do not care for keyboards with my surf, death to the keyboards! Confused Smile Cool
