Permalink Surf-sound using a Vox Tonelab

New Topic

Hi all,

I just wanted to present some of my "Shadows/Surf/Rock'n Roll"-sounds that I programmed on the Vox Tonelab:
Collection of "Shadows/Surf/Rock'n Roll"-sounds as mp3 (2.4MByte)

The first tunes ("Just the way You are", "Apache" in a Shadows-like sound (Vox AC 30 emulation), "Rumble" in the same sound adding overdrive, some chords in a sound I programmed as being an Ultravox guitar sound, "Surf Rider" and some chords in a Fender Tweed emulation with spring reverb and analog delay).

I used a "New American Series" Strat for the recording:

If You are interested I can make a MIDI-dump of these sounds and share them.

Hey, I'm not into pedals and pedalboards really, but that sounds really good.

...or just a couple of notes on what adjustments you made? So those of us with other amp modellers can TRY and emulate the sounds you created...

...ooo, that 'Rumble' and 'Surf Rider' have me highly motivated Very Happy ...

I've been very impressed with my Vox Valvetronix 30 practice amp and its modeled sounds. Playing a guitar like a jaguar clean through the twin and the bassman chanels really lets you hear a difference. Both pretty authentic as long as don't go nuts with the gain. Through a reissue reverb in front of it and you're done.

It's funny but lots of the "nostalgia" 80s touring bands are going the Chuck Berry route for their comebacks. Chuck used to pull up in his caddie, with his 355. He'd plug into whatever amp was at the club. Lots of the lower end 80s hair metal band guitarists, like twisted sister for instance, are showing up with two guitars and Line 6 Pod. It all comes around.

Drop the delay on your surf sound and it would satisfy lots of traditionalists.

Thank You!

Enjoy :).

EDIT: please note that every sound has two amp channels (Ach and Bch in the upper middle). The sound is based on the amp channel with the burning light.
Shadows: Channel B (amp AC 30, cabinet AC 30)
Rumble: Channel B (amp AC 30, cabinet AC 30)
Ultravox: Channel B (amp UK modern, cabinet UK H30 4x12)
Surf: Channel B (amp Tweed 1x12, cabinet Tweed 1x12)

Oooo, time to get out the V-Amp and see if I can work out sumfin'... Very Happy

Hey Oz
can you post your settings for the V-amp if you get a good sound with the Vox models. I have the LX -210 Vampire and the Vox models to me sound like an 8" speaker in a VB Carton. So. I usually use the Cali Clean or Black Twin for Surf.

Marty

Hey Sailor -
Thanks for posting the diagrams - I'll try them out on my ToneLab. I've got a couple surf settings that I use, so it will be interesting to compare. I'll let you know -
