A brownface Showman is THEE ONLEE SURF AMP. All else are poseurs in the extreme, but especially those hodads with the blackface Showmans, I mean come on, that's like driving a 85 Cadillac Cimarron and thinking you're as cool as the guys with the 59 Eldos. Forget it.

Mel

To my soul, ears and eyes this is the brother the next next most awesome surf machine to the brownface/blonde Showman

((((( 6G7-A 1962 Fender Bandmaster))))))) Worship
the same circuit as the holy grail brownface Showman 6G14 but the only difference is the wattage and a few reisitors and thier values and that's it!

The Bandmaster was also the next killer surf monster choice besides the Showman for trad surf bands in the 60s and still is today!

Ha. My first amp was a Gorilla GG-60 in 1986. I recall being impressed with the "tube-stack" knob at the time. My parents were less impressed.

Yep, I had one of those as well. Man I totally forgot about that amp until you posted that picture Mel.

The 6G6-B is surprising unpopular amongst surf guitarists. Personally it is one of my favorites. I lack time on a Brownface Showman, but the 6G6-B is amazing. I hope I get to use our 6G6 and 6G7 amps on the new record. I want to use my '66 Super with a '59 Bassman transformer as well. I want the next album to sound warmer. I hope these amps can fulfill that better than my Showman.

What's up with all the votes for Dual? Do that many of you play them?

The answer, no. I was thinking the same thing.

I'm not a fan of the term Dual Showman. The distinction should really be 4 or 8 ohm Showman. You can run either with one or two speakers. The only difference is the intended cab. I'm pretty sure they sold the heads without the cabs in the later years so even though it said dual showman it was a nada Showman for a bit.

And how ugly does the word dual look on the faceplate.

My Gorrilla was blue. I sold it for ten bucks Sad

you know - I voted for "Dual Showman" just to irritate Jake - It was fun, and easy!

I agree that the "Dual" lettering on the later blackface Showman (Showmen?) amps isn't as cool.... I swapped my faceplate - and I run either the 2x15 cabinet, or a 1x15 cabinet - both 4ohms.

"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been"

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of the "Dual" on the faceplate either when I first got mine. But over time, I think its growing on me. Believe me, I'd much rather have a brownface Showman, but those are a bit more difficult to come by at a decent $$. Maybe some day...

But... I voted "Dual" based on the point of the thread Stir the Pot

Gotta say I'm in this one with Dice-O. I recently bought a '62 6G7-A Bandmaster and I am stunned at what it will do. Using my fave 2-15 Ev-15L equipped cab it simply smokes and does it sound awesome at a moderate volume. Big, fat, round, and smooth as a baby's butt. It inspires me to sit there in front of it for hours noodling on every tune I can think of.....love it.

Ulitimate Surf Amp?

For me it's the Katcher/Torres '68 Dual Showman Reverb head I affectionately refer to as "Number 1." Playing out live on stage without it is like "taking a kinife to a gunfight." Armed with that head and one of my Dual EV equipped cabinets, I'll take on anybody's 2-15 rig.

Ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

My 2 retired boys, My '62 Bandy is the main rig now.

Yum.........boy those are sweet. We oughta try to get Woody to post some pix. He still has the original Bandmaster and Jaguar he bought in '65.

My stuff is mostly around to play out live with, so it's nowhere near that clean. Four of my five "Showmans" are cut down/recovered Dual Showman Reverbs. Of late, one of them lives in a recovered Twin Reverb cabinet. Convienent, but heavy.

I have one BF Dual Showman that was factory international multi-voltage. It's pretty cool and I have it paired up with a single 15 tone ring cab I snached from Spanky. Great rig to leave at Sticks' for practice. I am toying with the idea of building a single 12 tone ring cabinet for the 6G7-A Bandmaster.

I just love the smell of fresh sawdust!

Once again...............neat, really neat!

I would argue that Dual Showman's shouldn't be called Dual showmans unless that is what they say on the faceplate. If it is a 4-ohm Showman than it should be called a 4-ohm Showman.

Well yeah, but these things were sold with cabs that had 2 speakers in them. It's just marketing.

No offense over the Block "DUAL" Ruhar... I was just chiming in "tongue firmly planted in cheek"...

I love the white and brown cosmetics, but those amps have always sounded a tad nasal to me. I tend to like blackface tones, sort of scooped eq I guess. I have had and sold, 3-62 bassman amps, a 62 Pro, and a 63 showman. None of them really spoke to me... although I saw a video of us when I had one of the white bassman, and have to agree that it was a VERY rocking tone. Clean tones were just ok on those IMHO. Even on a bad day all those amps kick ass... Never had a Gorilla so I may be missing something.
