TJ Weger has an excellent surf tune for us to listen to. I think the use of steel and slide may head surf music in a new direction. Anyway I think if you have never heard TJs recording you would definately be wiping out !

Awe, shucks guys But, thank you for the kind words. I wrote this tune, honestly, so that I could play something else on steel other than just our standard hapa-haole material (which I like - just wanted something different). Our band, Haole Kats!!! (or Wholly Cats!!! if we're doing jazz/swing) started getting into playing surf about a year ago or so, and we really started digging it a lot. When we're doing our Haole Kats!!! alter-ego, we play a lot of the old 30's-40's hapa-haole Hawaiian with steel, upright bass and uke; but our favorite now is playing surf. I thought it might be fun to have a surf tune that featured the steel in a little bit different context than it's usually presented. We just got out of the studio, and recorded Kilawaimea as the title cut for our new CD. We ended up playing it a little bit faster, but overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I have a couple other demos I'd like to post, but frankly, I'm just not a regular guitar player. If I get the courage, I just may anyway! Thanks again for the nice comments, and encouragement. I'm glad folks are enjoying it! —Aloha, |

personally I wouldn't call it surf - surf-inspired maybe. but nevermind the genre nitpicking, it's a cool tune! I'm looking forward to hearing it with more live sounding drums. hey, do you know Phantom Frank, from the Phantom Four and the Treble Spankers - he did a surf inspired solo album with shitloads of slide - you might dig it. I would definitely have to agree with WR -- I think "surf-inspired" is pretty acurate. Thanks for the props! I'm glad people are digging it. Actually, if you go to our website at www.whollycatsband.com, and open the page that says "Surf Music," it should automatically open a sound file of this tune (only the newer version we did in the studio with real drums). I can get it to work when I use Internet Explorer, but for some reason, not with Mozilla. Not sure why...? Thanks again! Aloha, |

I'll see if I can get the actual track uploaded...this was TJ's quick-n-dirty demo to document the idea. |

Glad you dig the tune. We enjoy playing it, and I have some ideas for a few more steel driven tunes. Lapsteel is a fun instrument, especially in a '6th' tuning like C6 or A6. Too much fun... —Aloha, |
