Permalink Raveonettes/Tremolo Beer Gut

New Topic

A lot of this is inspired by the "What are you listening to?" thread, but these bands have generated some buzz, and a lot of curiousity in me, so rather than derail any current threads where this might go, hope it's o.k. to start a new one.

From what I understand, Sune Wagner was originally in TBG and left to create the Raveonettes with Sharin Foo. Some of Sune's instrumental work with the Raveonettes is lifted almost verbatim from his days with TBG, who have tried to carry on without him, but it looks like they haven't updated their website, with any new live dates, or released any new material. Have they pretty much called it quits?

Is Sune the only common denominator of these two groups?

The only real mention of Tremolo Beer Gut music I find in a search is "The Inebriated Sounds Of . . ", which is listed as no longer available on Amazon. I'm sure there are some out there to be had, though. Is all their music hard to locate? Admittedly, I haven't really started digging.

Sorry, more questions than I had planned.

I don't know if they've called it quits or not but replacing Sune would be pretty hard. He was very important to the TBG sound. At times it is easy to tell his parts from the other guitarists.

Sune is indeed the only common connection.

You can find all their albums on the internet. Tried teh Crunchy Frog, their label, website.

More importantly buy the Raveonettes' Pretty In Black album. Greatest guitar album ever.

Yeah, the other two Raveonettes CDs are good, but Pretty in Black is definitely where it's at. I wish I could get a sound like that when I played.

I have yet to hear TBG. I'm sure they're good, though, if Sune Wagner is involved. I think he's a great musician.

Honestly, the state of my pop/rock/alt music collection is pretty sad, I mean I have some great stuff, but it all leaves off in the early 90s when I did a complete about face and got into pre war jazz, blues and ethnic exclusively. So I'm excited about new music again, really because of what I'm hearing about on this forum and all the great bands that participate here.

I'll start with TBG "Inebriated Sounds" and Ravonettes Pretty in Black. I've read that it's kind of a departure from their first two albums--more "accesible". Though I also like the more Velvet Underground/Jesus and Mary Chain white noise drone sound as some have described their first couple albums.

I've gotten a little far afield for "Surf Music Discussion" I'm afraid . . .

Just picked up the new Raveonettes CD, "Lust, Lust, Lust" and have to say it's the best yet by them. Not a huge departure - still a mix of Jesus & Mary Chain with surf influences. There's some really nice reverb drip on "You Want The Candy" - a catchy song to boot. Any other alt rock discs with surf influences floating around?

I'm gonna go.

Yeah I agree Sean, Lust, Lust, Lust has a very J&MC and My Bloody Valentine feel to it. I think I still like Pretty in Black more though.

I've got tickets to see them on March 6th in SF. I got a copy of the new disc back in January (I think it was a British import or something) and it is really great. I'm with a few others on the forum - I'm still partial to "Pretty in Black"; like I'd said before, I think it's one of the best albums I've heard put out in the last 5-10 years.

I will also echo Sean's question - Are there any other alt/indie rock bands that incorporate surf like these guys?

I think I downloaded the early leak in August or so and then I got the import vinyl and I just picked up the US CD on tuesday and I rank it up there with their best. Pretty and Black is one of the best albums of all-time so it is hard to compare Lust, Lust, Lust. They are completely different albums and contain top-notch songs.

I've got tickets for the 9th. I can't wait. I saw them last summer and it was amazing.

I think Lust Lust Lust is really good, but more more Jesus and Mary Chain than Pretty in Black which had a sort of Jan and Dean thing going (normally not a good thing but in this case great).

Those of you that haven't heard Tremolo Beer Gut are seriously missing out. Really solid sound, and their cover of Sonic Youth's Death Valley 69 is incredible

Info:
The Drummer and producer in TBG "Yebo", (and producer on El Ray ´s album "Tick...Tick...Tick...")´s brother is now the new guitarrist in TBG. They also run a Danish label, "Crunchy Frog" where you can buy their albums. Really cool stuff!

Tremolo Beer Gut are still going strong, just put out a new album that is as good as their first two. TBG is one of my favorite surf bands, those who don´t know it shoud check them out (http://www.thetremolobeergut.dk and www.myspace.com/thetremolobeergut ), very nice mixture of uber cool surf with a streak of western. Does anybody know of similar bands?

btw, this is my first post, I have lurked on this forum but never posted, just got my first Jaguar yesterday so I feel like I can finally start posting Smile

I'm listening to Tremolo Beer Gut right now, it's pretty damn cool stuff. Some very cool angry and edgy instro tunes!

Sunday for me.

Yeah they played in Coasta Mesa this Last Sun.
I kept on telling myself to remember it.
I was even gonna try to drag Kristena to it.

But being sick the last 2 weeks,
alot of stuff kinda fell off the to do list.

I went to the show two days ago, and it ranks up there among the best shows I've seen. It's a fascinating set-up: Sune plays a Ventures Jazzmaster (one of those cool greyburst ones with the white pearl pickguard and gold hardware) through a Blackface Twin Reverb (which I assume to be reissue. Sharon plays a JM as well. As I recall hers was black with a tortoise guard, through a Super Reverb which I never got a really good look at. They perform with one other musician - a drummer who stands up and plays just a snare and floor tom, but also sees to it that all the samples/drum loops run smoothly.

As far as stage banter is concerned, they kind of lack, but the musicianship was amazing, and the sound at the club was HUUUUUGE. I don't know what it was about the show, but I was completely riveted when I saw them. The show was very sold out, so it was hard to get a clear view from where I was, but man - it was like the whole sound of the band just surrounds you. Unreal.

Thanks for the review Bill,
wish I could have seen them.
Im gonna have to catch them next time around for sure.
