Permalink I need audio for video how-to's

What do I need for mic's and mixer? Better camcorder?
I have a Canon miniDV Optura Xi camcorder that has mic and audio inputs. I think I need mic's or a small, portable mixer with bass roll-off.
It seems most band videos I watched have very distorted audio possibly from the onboard mic being overwhelmed by the bass material.
Anyone have suggestions? Idea ?

I had the same problem. I bought Rode stereo mic and I adjust the audio manually to keep everything well within the green..

Thank you for your reply. I read the Rode mic wasn't so spiffy but you get good results with yours.
Any more suggestions?

I use this mic with a "Dead Cat" on it & I always use the 10db filter.. Just keep the sound in the green..

It was the RODE NT-4 I had read complaints about. The Stereo Video mic looks like what I need. I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I have experience with the Sennheiser stuff... excellent sounding mikes, but very much $$$...

Those Sennheiser mics are $1,000 off MSRP on ebay. They are nice but more than I need to spend right now.
