Damn it, Ted! I'm going to have to order the Chimps stuff too. It seems like a lot of traditionally influenced surf bands get an urge to sing high energy beer fueled frat rock songs. I like how the description says, "If the Wailers and The Sonics got on stage at the same time". I always thought the Wailers morphed into something similar to the Sonics...atleast on the "Out of Our Tree" stuff

Ya know it makes me wonder, are there any trad surf bands doing any trad surf vocals?
Does any one want to tackle some Gary Usher?

The Chesterfield Kings (not a surf band)did a formidable job of Usher style vocals a coupla years ago. The Untamed Youth always did some too, but w/out all the harmonies.

When it comes to the Chimps, we got the urge to sing "high energy beer fueled frat rock songs" after Robert left SP in 98 and we weren't sure what to do without the third guitar (momentarily). Also, if you look back at the original 60s surf bands, very few of them played strictly instrumental. Just look at the Astronauts and Trashmen albums. Even bands that only released instrumental surf, played a lot of vocal covers in their live set, especially after the Beatles hit.

That's exactly right and maybe it's more "traditional" to sing! Laughing
I spoke with Doug Hensen awhile back and I asked him about the singing. He said the Showmen we hear on the Squad Car album were an entirely different band than their live act. Meaning they would sing whatever where top hits at the time.

I've always meant to pick up that Chimps stuff too...I really liked that song you did on that Monster Party 2000 comp...what was that.."It's The Mummy"? Anything monkey related is cool with me... Cool

Yeah. "It's the Mummy" from Mad Monster Party.
PS that Wailers meet the Sonics thing was all record-label speak. We would be lucky to be compared to the dirt in their fingernails, dammit!

Hey Ted, "It's the Mummy" sounds excellent, and it does sound like something the Sonics would have done.

We outta get the Chimps, the Aquanauts and the Thundercheifs together for frat/surf party.

For sure, but dammit all, I was hoping the "damn" thing would catch on for the rest of this damned thread.

I almost used "damn" instead of "man" in my response. Dammit!

I love that Chimps album--it's an instant party. Technically you don't have to add beer ... but it doesn't hurt.

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
