Good--but like Lawrence Welk in general, watered down for mass consumption. Here is a link from a video called "Hawiian Rainbow". It features the legendary Billy Hew Len on Rick frypan, in one of his last performances. Falsetto great Auntie Genoa Keawe is playing baritone uke. (BTW Billy lost his left hand as a young man and learned to play using a special glove/steel bar attachment.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IrSq1rOoL4 hope you like it! |

Billy was certainly one of the great players of the steel guitar. I'm amazed every time I watch Hawaiian Rainbow. |

Maybe you know, but that last link you posted is not hawaiian guitar. Hawaiian is always played with a steel bar with the guitar horizontal on the lap or on a stand. It is a big subject, like surf music. There are many exciting discovories to be made if you pursue this music. The list of greats is long, and spans the 1920's (even before) and into today. Some standounts: (there are may others) Sol Hoopii (early acoustic and electric steel pioneer) Here is a website and sound samples with many of the great players: http://www.mele.com/music/genre/steel+guitar/ Chek these out. They are on my list to get as well. I have so much Hawaiian music, but it never ends. http://www.mele.com/music/artist/lena+machado/hawaiian+song+bird/ http://www.mele.com/music/artist/andy+iona/hawaiians+in+hollywood/ Finally, there is a forum for Hawaiian steel guitar. It is a small group just getting started but they are friendly and can answer all questions about musicians, styles, instruments and how to play. They love newcomers because the Hawaiian Steel guitar has a small following, but must be preserved!!! I hope you learn to play it. http://www.hsga.org/forum/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl Aloha |
