It is still there. For some reason they have it listed as an "adult" site so it may not show up in a general search. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cowabunga/ —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

It's probably 'cause of all the cussin' and fightin' (flame wars) that go on. At least if it's anything like what it used to be when I was a member before. Maybe it stopped when I left though. thanks,

sometimes I refer to it being deadsville. meaning a ghost town. Its funny as new people still pop up on there from time to time. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

I still get several people a week signing up for the Reverborama group. A while back I changed the welcome message directing them over here for active conversation. video killed the radio star and surfguitar101 killed the email groups. Change happens. Spanky

Back on the SG101 Yahoo Group days, we kicked around the idea of doing a web forum one time and we shot it down. Maybe a year later I discovered these "portal" software packages and pulled the trigger on it. It was a very controversial decision but I am so glad I did it. I like this format much better. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

It's funny, there are a few people over there, who I know are members of SG101, but never post here, only on Cow. And, there are enough people on that list who are not members of SG101 that still makes it worthy to post show announcements. Buy Speed of Dark @ Bandcamp |

Last time I attempted a Yahoo Group search I noticed they had made improvements to it. Cowabunga was definitely an important list. I just wish there was an easy way to get all the messages in the archive out of Yahoo's hands. I'd like to do that for the SG101 Yahoo group. Then put the messages somewhere where it could be searched better. I am sure there is a gold mine of info in the Cowabunga archives too. A good snapshot of the booming 90's scene. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Actually I think Cowabunga only goes back to sept 27th 2000. I think I joined around 2002 or so. There were 2 other servers for cowabunga before the yahoo groups. I tried to access that recently , from a link I found on the Big interview that is in the front news pages here, and it was a dead link. I have thought about periodically going thru cow and sg101 yahoo groups, The Mermen and NESMA yahoo groups get a bit of traffic still. I heard recently that a few of the Mermen fans lurk here. I think you had two different versions of Cowabunga. First there was some kind of "usenet-ish" type of list tha goes back into the mid-90s. I started to subscribe in 98, and I seem to remember that at most(even though rare) there could be like 150 posts a day. I remember in the beginning I sat for hours just to read through the messages, just because I thought it was so cool that there were so many people wanting to discuss surf music. Around 2000 they moved the whole list to yahoogroups. What I liked about this was that you could read all the posts on the site instead of receiving mails all the time, which I found really useful as I started to get real tired of all those emails coming in continously. Then there was a year and a half or so until the Reverborama list started (spring/summer 2001 I think). I was a member of both, even though they were roughly twin-versions of one another with maybe a little more postings on Cowabunga. SG101 I never really checked out until nowadays. Two surf-lists were more than enough. —guitarist, The Mobsmen |

I think I was briefly on one of the email based ("egroups") Cowabunga incarnations. Then I quit and joined back up again when it was a Yahoo Group. So yeah, Jeff, you are probably right about the archives on the Yahoo Group not going back super far. It would be really awesome to get a hold of the original mailing list archives. Fun fact: I started SG101 as a YahooGroup not to compete with the mighty Cowabunga and Reverborama, but to take the gear and musician angle on the surf scene. I posted a question on Cowabunga about strings and someone yelled at me because they wanted to discuss surf music, not gear. So I started my own group. After the group had grown quite a bit we sort of stopped the gear and musician only mentality and discussed everything, as by that time the moderator (or lack thereof) problems had made Cowabunga a mess. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Yeah I know, I thought it was odd too. That's where the Cowabunga Gear FAQ came from, after all. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

And so, Google offerred no better advantages than Yahoo and never picked up any interest. The superior SG101 portal model separates out the sub-interests which used to cause off-topic flame wars. Plus, unlike Cow (where Brian Ehrmantraut went AWOL without delagating some moderation control) you have an in-control level-headed moderator in the mix. Thanks again, Brian! I believe Cow will remain active as a "bulletin board", useful as a bullhorn. But there has been no community dynamic there now since SG101 and the old flame wars - an inevitable characteristic of non-flexible topic/off-topic internet posting boards. It is clear in 2008 that SG101 replaces Cow as the instro/Surf "town center" and that MySpace replaces the Cow webring. Seems all good to me. Now, can we get some corporate sponsors here (gee, Fender & XM Radio couldn't hurt!) to help promote the genre!?? Nice to be here! Yeah, I'll try and post more often when I have time. |

Way back when, I posted on either alt.guitar or rec.music.makers.guitar (remember Usenet?) asking where I could find more music that sounded like the Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet and somebody sent me to Cowabunga. One of the very first messages that came through after I subscribed was from Mel Waldorf announcing the Mel-Tones' Powerwagon cassette. That was released in 1995, so Cowabunga goes back at least that far. (Incidentally, that tape was the thing that inspired me to try making music myself. Mel, you're my hero! ) |

I first found out about Cowabunga from Larry "Moon Dawg" White in the summer of '94. I finally joined some 9-12 months later, when I first got 'connected' and got an email account. I remember that the participants at that time included Rip Thrillby, Ferenc, Moon Dawg (obviously), John Blair, Jamie Murray, Phil Dirt (I think), Mel Waldorf, Evan Foster, Deke Dickerson, hmmm, can't think of any others, though I'm sure I'm overlooking many people that are well known in the surf music community. Cowabunga was an invaluable resource at that time, really fantastic. I learned SO much from people there. From '95 until '98 or '99, it was a great thing. It started fracturing after that, too many flame wars and jerks. I still have all the email posts (from all participants, not just me) saved on bunch of floppy discs somewhere. (It was originally an email listserv.) That'll be fun to go through someday - if anybody has floppy disc drives in the future! Ivan —Ivan |

Yes, Ivan! I think I've also been on Cow since around 1994. And as was mentioned, many great early contributors. I'm not the grand historian, but I give most credit for the formation of online community to Moon Dawg and John Blair. This when folks like yourself, Mel Waldorf, Phil Dirt, Dave Arnson and fans like Laura X showed up, it became an educational exciting and vibrant place. Bands like The Mermen were always controversial, but others like MoAM and The Bomboras were also being discussed. I remember reviewing many shows for Cow and loved hearing about new CD releases from bands. My fave local Bay Area instro/Surf band in the 90's was The Torpedoes. Lots of good memories from this period and Cow was a big part of it. Another piece of trivia: When I worked at Sun Microsystems in the mid-90's, while doing a piece of product collateral, I used a screenshot of an email reader which happened to be displaying the Cowabunga emails. And so permanently inked in tech history are views of Cow emails and phrases such as Phil Dirt Surf's Up (when he used to publish his playlist). This was cool when "Surfing the internet" tied the concepts together. bIG wAvE Dave |
