Just letting every one know, we posted some new recordings we cut two Sundays ago at Jet-Tone studio B (my extra bed room) on the myspace page.
See the link in my sig.
We've been having allot of fun recording ourselves and exploring all the different ways to get different sounds.
In the end they all just sound like us, I think.
Hope y'all enjoy.

Very nice guys, I like it. Rock and roll vocals with the drippy guitar sounds so good. You guys do it well.
And I echo what Ted says, "Gremmie's Holiday" sounds great!

Thanks Bill and Ted, (there's a pun in there)
The stuff I write and sing comes out on the pop side of things (to much Bobby Fuller, Buddy Holly and the Everlys going in my ears).
I'm just a pop rock and roll nut.
I'll have to leave the real garage singing up to Bobby and Joe.
Man I just discoved the Gestures of Run, Run, Run fame via a sundazed vinal re-ish on ebay.
I'm freakin out over that stuff! American kids singing Brit pop style vocals with Jags and reverb!

Shaun,
There's nothing wrong with sounding like either Buddy or Bobby. That's about as "American" sounding as it gets. If the other guys sound more garage like, then you guys got all the bases covered.
I actually recently got the Gestures CD myself, and you're right "Things We Said Today" sounds pretty good with the Fender guitars and amps.

Damn, you have good taste. I wasn't going to say anything when you mentioned "You Weren't Using Your Head" and "One Potato", but now you're onto Run, Run, Run. We did Run, Run, Run for our whole tour with the Bomboras in '98 with Dave Klein sitting in on drums. The other songs we did with our spinoff frat band The Chimps
see here

The Chimps may make a surprise appearance at some of the upcoming SP shows, so stay tuned!

Thanks Klas,
Yep, we did a one mic to cassette demo of that one about a month ago.
The new one is just a cleaner re-recording with the same hot rod sound effects I put on the first demo.
I got my hands on an 8-track A-dat recently and so we've been messing around with it the past couple of weeks.
I mix the stuff pre-amping though an old Bell tube deck to try to warm it all up. It's working out pretty good.
Man I really love Spinning Boards, I sounds fantasic!
what are you using equitment wise down in the Surfite basement?

I see, I first thought it was the old version since it sounded a bit different from your other 3 new recordings.

Thanks for the nice words on the Spinning Boards demo although we have been struggling a bit on getting the so important overall sound we're looking for. The tune was recorded quite a few months back and isn't really representative for our current sound which is much closer to what we are after. Our basement equipment isn't much to write home about though, me and Jack simply have a Fender QuadReverb amp and two reissue tanks. Our bass player Folke lines his Mustang bass directly into the recorder using only a pre-amp, piano player Henry have some obscure Italian electric piano similar sounding to a Fender Rhodes and drummer Gunnar using a beat up kit we put together from different sources.

Yeah, I mixed "Buzzard Coupe" in mono and the others in stereo.
The stereo mixes came after a long listen to "Surfin with the Astronuats"
in stereo. Man that's some hard stereo on that one, really separated.
I thought "Buzzard Coupe" sounded a bit tougher in mono.

Damn it, Ted! I'm going to have to order the Chimps stuff too. It seems like a lot of traditionally influenced surf bands get an urge to sing high energy beer fueled frat rock songs. I like how the description says, "If the Wailers and The Sonics got on stage at the same time". I always thought the Wailers morphed into something similar to the Sonics...atleast on the "Out of Our Tree" stuff

Ya know it makes me wonder, are there any trad surf bands doing any trad surf vocals?
Does any one want to tackle some Gary Usher?

We have been using a 4-track digital recorder which actually do the job pretty well.

In the Daytonas we did quite a few trad surf/hot rod vocals over the years. Here are some from the top of my head:
Hot Rod High
Surfin' Hearse
R.P.M.
Surf Route 101
Ridin' The Rails
Honda Bike
Surf City
GeeTO Tiger
Surfin' Safari
Tell 'Em I'm Surfin'

Cool Klas, I love Hot Rod High.
Did you guys ever record any of them.
I hear ya on digital muti-trackers, they can sound great and not too digital at all if you use them right.
The new technology is really something.
Well heck, I'm off to Enland for a few days so I'll talk to you guys next week.

Of the ones I listed, we did record Hot Rod High, GeeTO Tiger (both on the Parabolica double LP) and Ridin' The Rails (on the Quarter Mile CD).

The Chesterfield Kings (not a surf band)did a formidable job of Usher style vocals a coupla years ago. The Untamed Youth always did some too, but w/out all the harmonies.
When it comes to the Chimps, we got the urge to sing "high energy beer fueled frat rock songs" after Robert left SP in 98 and we weren't sure what to do without the third guitar (momentarily). Also, if you look back at the original 60s surf bands, very few of them played strictly instrumental. Just look at the Astronauts and Trashmen albums. Even bands that only released instrumental surf, played a lot of vocal covers in their live set, especially after the Beatles hit.
