besides Nokie is not a surf guitarist, why we talking about him.

Nokie is the most versatile guitarist who has ever lived. Although he doesn't specialize in surf guitar, who can play surf guitar better than the Nokester??????

I have to agree with you seafoam Johnny.
For example: If you asked Nokie to play Miserlou, he could probably play it blind folded, but if you asked Dick to play Hawaii-5-O, he would probably jack it up.
Although, I think Dick is a better showman, Nokie is a better guitarist, IMO.
But, I love em' both.

Yes, but if you asked Dick Dale to play something relaxed, laid back and friendly, he could do it - but if you asked Nokie to rock hard agressively he'd flunk bigtime. Wink nothing to do with age either, both have always been like that, just a different breed of musicans. "technically" speaking Nokie owns Dick, no doubt about it, otoh Dick is able to make it sound like pure testosteron is pouring form his speakers, while Nokie expresses the emotional depth of a 12yr old suburbia girl, at best. Both have their merits for sure and I love the Ventures, but for me the aggresiveness, bite and sweat are more important to surfmusic than technique. Yeah nokie can play Miserlou blindfolded, but it wont sound like a surf song any more.

nevermind, I like the videos of Nokie. it's not a competition anyway is it? Confused

WOE!!!! EXCUSE ME !!!????? I beg your pardon!!!!!
I Love both these guys, but what the heck kind of comparison is that???

Number #1) Name me a "nice relaxed, laid back song from Dick Dale.....
Number #2) "but if you asked Nokie to rock hard aggressively, he'd
flunk bigtime."....................
Obviously, you are NOT that familiar with the Ventures. Alot of people
have "stereotyped" them as just a Surf Band, or a band that plays alot
of songs from the 40's (from their early albums when Bob Bogle was the
Lead Guitarist).
When Nokie switched to Lead guitar (and by this time, they had switched to the Mosrite), there is A LOT OF AGGRESSIVE PLAYING during that era, enough as such that another studio guitarist credits them with being one of the first bands to use an early distortion pedal 2-3 years before Keith Richards used one on "Satisfaction."
That guitarist also said there was a lot of progressive playing for that
time in the early 60's. That guitarist was Jimmy Page.
You, my friend, have obviously never heard the live version of "Caravan" from 1965 by them. There was some serious guitar playing in that song that nobody ever heard before, in which they put to a rock
theme. There were not that many instrumental bands playing with that
type of aggressiveness. And if that's not enough, you might want to check
out a few other albums, "DRIVING GUITARS" or"VENTURES IN SPACE."

1) Belo Horizonte, Taco Wagon, not too many others...
2) WR is very familiar with the Ventures as are most of the people on this forum. In fact most of the people on this forum don't consider them to be a surf band, but instead an excellent instrumental band that plays surf music.

I agree that the Ventures can play aggressively, and Live in Japan, Ventures in Space, etc rawks. But I think what WR was trying to say that in comparison to DD, Nokie isn't known for an aggressive tone (but against DD who does?). DD wields the flamethrower and howitzer, Nokie has the smart bomb and UAV. Wow that's a crazy analogy.... Duh

Dude,
if you don't know who Paul Johnson is, you might just need to leave this forum, or read it a whole lot more.

and As Many posted above DD blows everybody away in the power intensity dept. Nokie sounds like hes playing Jazz compared to DD.
if you dont hear that or notice that.
Then we should just stop discussing it now.

I'm going to be a total dick for a minute - I apologize in advance. But I need to say this.

It is remarkable to me that somebody can have 153 posts on SG101 - and not know who Paul Johnson is. To me that indicates a serious lack of knowledge of basic history of surf music, and probably a lack of basic understanding of what surf music really is all about.

I don't know Dennis, he may be a very nice guy and a great guitar player. But I'm still completely baffled by this. Why do people that don't know very much about surf music feel compelled to regularly write posts? This internet phenomenon is at the same time fascinating and maddening. You would think they would be more eager to read and learn rather than post.

Please ask yourself if you are really qualified to write about something before posting. Lately the ratio of crap-to-quality on SG101 has been going up at an alarming rate. As on a lot of internet forums we see a form of Gresham's Law - bad money drives out good money, or in this case bad posts drive out good posts. People that are very knowledgable don't get involved because it's becoming more and more difficult to dig through all the trash, and it gets frustrating for them dealing with people who act as if they know everything when they in fact don't, not even close.

Yes, I know I'm being really elitist, but it seems to me that people need to exercise some basic editorial judgment if SG101 is going to continue to be relevant and useful.

First of all, let me apologize for not knowing who Paul Johnson is. I've heard of the Bel-Airs, but that does not mean I'm going to know everyone's name in the group. You have to understand that some of these groups were before my time, and I am very interested in learning about the ones that I am not familiar with. And as the saying goes, if you don't ask, how will you learn? I also need to reiterate, that there have been times when a performer, amp, effect, etc. was being discussed on this Forum, and when I wasn't sure about what was being said, I would try to do a Search on the Forum, in this case, going to the Links and do a Search on "Bands" and/or "Surf Videos" for Paul Johnson with no luck (BTW, there's no listing for the Bel-Airs under "Bands"). From there I went to You Tube to see if I could find anything on Paul Johnson. No luck. They DO have the Bel-Airs on there, but again, I did not know who Paul Johnson was at that moment. Then I came back to the Forum and asked for help
(guidance). Boy, did I get a surprise! I had no clue that I was gonna get "shot down" for not knowing. LOL!
I apologize to the folks who have known the Bel-Airs from the start.
All I ask, is please be patient with us newbs, for we'll never learn what a lot of people all ready know on this Forum Embarassed

wtf?? old grumpy men...i have no idea who Paul Johnson is..so what? Im seriously considering leaving this place..

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

Oh no, then you won't know if a Jag is drippier than a Strat! ;)

Just to nitpick. Paul is in our links section. The Belairs (note the spelling) are not, since, well, they don't have a web page!

But anyway, that's neither here nor there. Everyone is welcome here. Things have been a little tense here lately.

This thread is already totally hijacked. But the "who is Paul Johnson?" question once again reinforces the fact in my mind that this site needs a Wiki. We need to capture all this tribal knowledge we have. Are we going to trust the clowns at Wikipedia for that? ;)

Dennis I appreciate how you took that. We'll talk Dick v. Nokie some other time in a well-spirited manner okay?

Hey Dennis,
Thanks for staying positive and being a good sport. Very Happy Until we get the wiki going, check out http://www.reverbcentral.com/. In the articles section there is a great series of links that start with "What is Surf" and moves on through the history etc. I highly recommend you check out Paul Johnson with the Bel Airs and PJ & The Galaxies (along with his other stuff). The PJ and the Galaxies stuff can be found on this compilation:

If you like the dry, driving sound of Nokie, I'll bet you'll like it. A lot.
Paul's bandmate from the Bel Airs, Eddie Bertrand, started Eddie & The Showmen. If you're not familiar with them, they are considered crucial listening, no matter what generation you are from. I wasn't around back then either, but these guys transcend old or new.
There's a lot more to the story, including Eddie's presence here on SG101, which is incredible. You can take it from here if you're interested.
