We submitted a tune to Genya Ravan for her Sirius shows, "Chicks & Broads" and "Goldie's Garage" featuring '60's garage music both old and revival. We sent "Tramp" from "The Originals" because it's a garage tune and would fit her format.

We were told "sorry, you sound good but I really don't play instrumentals."
Ok...maybe I'm wrong here but didn't many '60's garage bands play instrumentals?

Genya Ravan fronted a band from the late 60s named 10 Wheel Drive.

No, but the question was, didn't many 60's garage bands play
instrumentals? Yes, and the answers are listed above. Mr. Green

I think Klas's point was the bands you cited aren't usually considered "garage" bands.

Right. Sure, some garage bands recorded instrumentals, but they were usually b-sides of the 45 or filler on the lp, if they were big enough to have one, and not what the band was primarily known for.
It's a good thing this isn't as garage forum. The criteria for being "garage" is much harder to pin down and everyone has their own opinion. But, I belong to some of them and they don't tend to get hung up on "what is and what isn't" as much as surf fans do. It's not as much as an exact science. I think garagers look at surf like old school punkers looked at ska. There's overlap, and a lot of them like it, but it's a different animal.
I listen to Sirius's Underground Garage sometimes and they play everything from Elvis to the New York Dolls to Bruce Springsteen with old and new garage mixed in.
They do play surf and instrumentals during the Musical Beds, when the dj is talking and listing the songs that were played in the last set. We get played on those a fair amount along with the Nebulas, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy, Bomboras, Davie Allen, The Atlantics, Krontjong Devils, Ventures, Laika and the Cosmonauts, Los Straitjackets, Evan Foster, etc...
Sure, there is someone talking over you and they don't mention you on the air, but it does get listed in the online playlists, so if someone is listening online, they can see a listing and get a link to the band's site. I've gotten quite a few emails where someone mentions hearing one of our songs in one of these musical beds and discovered us that way.
Also, check the recent news item on the home page about sending cds to Lou Brutus at XM for his surf show. If the XM/Sirius merger would just go through, things could open up even more for our little genre.

Good analogy, I like that!
Likewise, a lot of ska people tend to like surf too. It's all part of a retro-subculture. Rockabilly/Pschycobilly is part of it too.

I think the Trashmen can be considered a 60's group that combined instrumental and garage.

Here is that story in which Lou Brutus asked for surf bands that Ted mentioned. Maybe Lou will play your band Susan!

A lot of DJs have played our material over the years and I thank each and every one of them. The point of my post was to call attention to the absurdity of a DJ who plays 60s garage music arbitrarily excluding instrumentals.

Instrumental discrimination.
I think we've all been a victim of it at one time or another.

Like I tried to explain earlier-
It's neither exclusionary nor arbitrary.
Just move on and try someone else.

Actually Genya Ravan is a nice person but she does not play surf on her show. She told us the same thing and was still nice enough to play our songs on her talk ups as spskins spoke about. Underground Garage is a great channel and just to expound on what spskins said they do play surf tunes on almost all the talk ups but also every band he mentioned they play fully, not just on talk ups. I've heard all those surf bands and many more. It really just depends on the DJ's and they're just mix it in with all the other songs. Although XM has a show that plays an hour of surf once a week they probably play much more on Underground Garage over the course of a week.

I lurk in the shadows a lot. Thought I'd come out for a bite! Very Happy

Here is the verbatim quote from the email Genya Ravan sent to me:

"Hi, thank you for your submission. I don't really play instrumentals. Sorry, y'all sound good too."

As you can see she is arbitrarily rejecting instrumentals and not rejecting the specific tune I sent her. As someone who has a lifelong love of instrumental music, be it surf or garage, I was somewhat dismayed that a DJ hosting a show on an outlet such as Sirius with its large market share would show an anti-instrumental bias. I posted this information on the list because I wanted to share it with people who I believe have the same affinity I do for instrumental music. I do not know what Little Steven's policy is regarding instrumentals as I have not submitted anything to him as of yet.

Susan

Hey Susan!
I haven't heard Susan & The Surftones in a looong time. Are you still in the PDX area and playing any shows? Sorry.... off topic... just wanted to say hello to a PacNW rawkin' surfer girl and hope you're doing great!
