Hey everybody,

I have heard from several members of the SG101 community that some of you have been asking about my situation so, I thought it would be good to give you an update…
It’s been 3 weeks since I had my surgery to remove a benign brain tumor (acoustic neuroma) and I am still home recovering. The doctors tell me that I should be able to get back to work in about 3 more weeks.

The 2 biggest obstacles that one faces with this kind of situation is…
1-Loss of equilibrium in one ear
2-Loss of hearing in one ear

So...in whatever you do...please, Protect Your Hearing! It is hard to adjust to any type of hearing loss...especially SSD (single sided deafness).

My family and I want to thank you again for your posts and support on SG101. I received so much support from so many people that I have yet to meet face to face. I am really looking forward to getting back to writing, recording, playing and performing new surf tunes with my band.

See you at the upcoming SG101 convention/meeting/get-together/party!

Hi Duff, that is great news that you are up on your feet and back on the recovery road! I hope all goes well.

So, if you don't mind me asking, how does one discover that they have a brain tumor? OMG

For me, it started with tinitis (ringing in the ear) and a slight loss of hearing on just my right side. No pain or headaches. After a visit to my primary doctor then, an ear, nose and throat specialist then, a hearing test followed by an MRI of my head. The tumor (acoustic neurma) showed up in the MRI.
That was last July...it took this long to have some additional tests done and all of the necessary HMO authorizations completed.
...some fun, huh?

Wow, so you walked around for half a year knowing something f'ed up was in your brain and you had to wait for the doctors to take it out? Respect for not getting completly crazy.

I hope the recovery goes well and you find a way to deal with the loss of hearing. here's to you: Cheers

Wow. When I had a case of vertigo, I went to an ENT, and they noted I had tinitis and a slight hearing loss in one ear. They wanted me to come back in a year to see if it had changed, but I never did. I guess I should.

...get an MRI. It's better to know.

Tinitis, hearing loss and vertigo can be caused by a lot of different things besides a tumor like mine.

Fortunately for me, we live about an hour from one of the top clinics/hospitals in the world for what I had. It's called the House Ear Clinic. Check them out on the web. There's a lot of good info there.

So Duff, is your hearing loss permanent or something that will come back? And same with your balance? I was told during my therapy that it partially comes back, but also your body has to recalibrate itself.

Unfortunately, in my case, the hearing loss is permanent on my right side. The balance is coming back, day by day. At the time of the surgery, my equilibrium was functioning at only about 30% effectiveness so, that is why my recovery (balance) is not as drastic as it would be if it was functioning better than that prior to my surgery...does that make sense?

So many other people have had more dramatic, life-changing events happen to them in an instant like, getting hit by a bus…for me, the hard part was looking down the street and seeing this bus coming at me for 6 months or so….and not being able to get out of the way…

…again, thanks for all the support.

Glad to have you back and on your feet. Here's hoping the recovery time is minimal.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.
