Never seen one but Joe Meek's sideman Geoffrey Goddard definitely made great use of it.

ja det hade vart helt suveränt att använda en..men det lär väl tyvärr vara helt omöjligt att få tag på en..(it would have been great to use one unfortunately i guess it is almost impossible to get hold of one)

For anyone who doesn't know what they sound like:
Runaway (solo) : Del Shannon
Telstar: Joe Meek (Spotniks)
Baby Your'e a Rich Man : Beatles
Pretty much zero chance of getting hold of one I'd say...

Does anyone know of a CD with samples of the Clavioline that I could load into a sampler? Or is there a keyboard with a Clavioline preset? Or a computer virtual keyboard with the Clavioline sound?

What an amazing sound! the one Runaway is a Musitron..a heavily modified Clavioline..at least after what i have heard. yes sorry to say but it seems impossible to get one. man i´d love to have one in my band.

I am interested in vintage keyboards myself lately. I did't know about the Clavioline. There is this website for more info:

I am surprised that Nord does not have a sample version? They cover most other keyboard sounds it seems . . .

I have seen one for sale, so they may be hard to find, but I'm sure not impossible. I see they are a primitve kind of sampler. A very early synthesizer of sorts. I think it would be hard to do a sample of a sampler.
At least the "Telstar" sound would be nice. It sounds like the "bagpipe" setting to me.

yes!!That's the other instrument I was trying to figure out!!
It sounds like a HYBRID between a bagpipe and an accordian......
Awesome sound for Telstar.

There's no sampling going on in there - Im sure of that; the technology didn't exist. The earliest form of sampler was the Mellotron with it's tape loops. Even then it wasn't very easy or practical to do your own.

Ok, thanks for clarifying!
Actually, for surf I much prefer the electric piano sound like the Chantays used on Pipeline. I think I read that it was a Wurlitzer model. I hear the same sort of sound on The Surfite's "Big Pounder" album to very nice effect.
Some organ begins to sound more "garage" to me.

It's great to hear that there is a growing interest in Claviolines. Part of my work is doing full restorations of vintage keyboards (my specialty is Moog modular synths) and I've restored about 20 Claviolines to date.
They were made under various licenses by several manufactures but the model I've seen the most of are the one's made by Gibson. They are all fairly fragile so I encourage all of my clients who want to use them live to purchase two, one serving as a spare parts source for keys, switches, mechanical parts, etc.
If you want one, they are around, you just have to be patient and persistent. Rest assured that it will need servicing and possibly some kind of mechanical restoration. Most that come up for sale have been stored unused for decades. An amazing sounding instrument indeed though.
Another tube oscillator instrument that's worth investigating and is usually a bit easier to find is the Hammond Solovox. They made three different models, the J, K and L. I've restored all three versions and although the L is the easiest to repair, by far my favorite is the J model. It's the earliest version, a bitch to get going but well worth it in my opinion. Solovoxes can be heard on various Tommy James and Tommy Roe cuts.
I hope you find your Clavioline.

soniccouture have a sample package called "The Attic" which includes Univox and Solovox samples.
As for Clavioline I found a freeware sample pack by Burt Wolff called "Clavioline For Structure". The download link has been dead a long time but I have it on my PC if anyone would like to try it out. Unfortunately Structure wasn't the most popular plugin and it was created using Pro-Tools, I'm not sure if that furthers the problem. The file extension for Structure is .patch and so far I can only find one compatible converter called "Chicken Systems Translator" - too expensive for a single task.

I've seen the Clavioline used on Telstar played by Peter Knight, with The Moontrekkers.

That would clear the speculation I'm seeing elsewhere on the net, that a Univox was used for Telstar.

A couple of years ago I was trying to create a soft synth emulation of a Clavioline. I didn’t have a set of samples but had to go by ear, listening to Clavioline tracks in my library and online and using information I could gather about the preset sounds available on the instrument.
Kai Winding had a Clavioline on some of his best tracks. I did one track with the best I could come up with - more Winding than Tornados.
The computer broke down some time later. I still have the audiofiles and the presets, but the soft synth host is not running on modern systems, so I would pretty much have to start over on a new platform to have some Clavioline-like sounds again. Not that I had time to record something anyway.
In any case here’s that track.
