Had the ipod on shuffle and I hit a streak of Euro-Surf:

Does anyone listen to the Langhorns? Such a warm, smooth sound! I know little about them. They are from Sweden. I don't even know if they are active anymore.

Los Twang Marvels from Germany are really amazing!

Laika and The Cosmonauts is still a favorite of mine. I just love the crushing, destroy-all-in-their-path rendition of Mission Impossible on their live CD.

The Kilaueas seem to have dropped off the planet since their mini-tour of the US a little while back. But wow is their Professor Vulcanova CD excellent!

Husky & The Sandmen seem to have been a short lived 90's surf band from Finland. I really dig their Ridin' the Wild surf CD.

And I can't get enough Bambi Molesters. I hope we hear from them again soon.

And wow The Treble Spankers! Worship

I think we need a Mono-Tones CD as well. ;)

Luckily we had all 3 of the Langhorns cds come in thru my old work, and I got all of those and love them., I dig the Exotica bits they throw in.

Need to Check out Los Twang Marvels

I agree the Live Laika is killer but still really like the 1st 2 cds they did , that hardly anybody knows about. Didn't I sell you those Brian?

I heard that One of the Kilaueas guys was starting a faimly(i.e. wife having a kid) so that may be part of that. But I do see Ralf post once in awhile on the German surf forum.

I just saw a copy of Ride the Wild Surf at a cd store the other day.
almost bought it to sell to someone else, yeah they rule.

Yeah Bambis are killer, I just listened to all their stuff the other day,
I'm jonesing for some new stuff too.

JUst listened to the 2 Treble Spankers around the Holidays, just amazing.

Yes A Monotones cd would be nice, wonder if there is plans for that?????

D'oh I forgot to mention The Beat Tornados from Norway. That Mission to Mir CD is really killer. It can be very heavy, whirling about like a tornado at times.

So many talented bands from Scandanavia!

hello! i just wanted to ask if You guys have heard a band from my country they are called Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks..i case you have heard them what do you think?

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

www.myspace.com/tumbleweedofsurf

I have one cd by R&tPD's
I thought it was very rough and punky, kinda Link Wray meets surf.
but heavier.

I need to give it a listen again.

Yeah, I really dig the Langhorns. Mission Exotica is a hell of a record. Fantastic mix of styles and great songs. They also do a great cover of Moriconne's The Vice of Killing on the For a Few Guitars More comp. (A Must Have!!).

I've also really gotten into The Quiets from Finland. They phenomenal. Mostly slower, moodier stuff. They do a lot of covers, but they're not your trad surf tunes. They do tunes like Desafinado and Magnificent Seven. I highly recommend these catz! Does anyone know if they are still together?

Also, I'm a huge fan of all of Phantom Frank's endeavors: The Treble Spankers, The Phantom 4. His solo album Dead Man Surfing is really good. Laika & The Cosmonauts are probably one of my fav groups of any genre. The Kilaueas are excellent. I have the Professor Volcanova disc and it pretty damn good. I too need to check out Los Twang Marvels, cuz I've heard really good things about them.

I also really dig the classic Euro bands, although not surf: The Shadows, The Spotnicks, etc...

The Razorblades from Germany have material for a new CD but they are having changing the lineup with a new drummer and rhythm guitarist. Their sound is moving away from what I thought to be a heavy metal influence, especially in the drums.

If anyone has not picked up Los Twang: Marvels, they are exceptional. I bought it based on Ivan's review and it quickly became one of my favorites.

you needd to lidten.

I think tyhat you like to repeat the Euro sound action..you have to take a very good Vintage euro Echo like Binson or Wem.. or others.. and try to get this partticular old exciting Stykle

I don,t agree..with the new Euro Surf sound..Sorry...

conly pherhaps..with Trebble Spunkers..

and the last Twang M album..recorded at Circo Perroti..100% Vintage 60,s sound...

Iv'e always thought it would be interesting to get some views of the modern "euro" sound vs. what is happening in contemporary instro in the U.S.

Even with my very limited listenting experience (mostly youtube links and other soundfiles posted here) the Euros seem less affected by the hard rock and punk influences that have seemed to infiltrate U.S. bands.

That's neither good nor bad, just my sense of it. The Euro bands seem to exhibit more of an ironic detatchment. There's a lighter approach and elements of electronica, even if it's not overt. I'm thinking here of the Bambi Molesters and The Surfites (the only Euro I actually own at the moment.)

Do I seem to be on the right track here?

No, I'd say the Euros are as equally diverse as others. It's just that they (well some of them) have a more Shadows (echo) influence than some US bands.

I played a Los Twang Marvels on the podcast. They also have a myspace.

Another good band: Denmark's El Ray. More of a punked up, rip your head off, surf sound.

Haha, I was over at cd baby listening to The Kilueas samples when I read this. I followed your links and listented---yes, perhaps the genre is too diverse to make any blanket generalizations about a "euro sound". It must be the Shadows influence you mentioned that is the common denominator I think I'm hearing.

I can only describe it as a tendency toward the more decadent aspects of this music that strikes me as quitessentialy European. Particulary Northern European. Do most of these bands seem to be from Germany, Scandanavia and Eastern Europe?

I really like the following Euro bands, but my collection is sadly lacking in Euro Twang

the Langhorns, Laika & the Cosmonauts, the Treble Spankers (one of my all time faves), the Surfites, the Krontjong Devils, Twang, and The Kilueas

I've really been playing The Kilueas Double Crown Relelase a lot. It's one of my new favourites.

Doug,
how is their sound moving away from what they were?
heavier. or more Trad.?
