Hello everybody. I guess I'll make this my introduction post as well.

My name is Nicholas Carlyle, and I'm a composer for my small, independent filming company, Lithios Entertainment.

Well, recently, I decided to start playing guitar. Which is just as well as I actually need to write surf rock for a movie that is in development.

First... please don't ask how surf music fits in to a Legend of Zelda parody, because I have no clue Laughing

Second - any good recommended sites for a beginner to learn how to play surf rock? My favorite song right now is "Surfing Guitar" by the 66 Boys (it's a song on the Metal Gear Solid 3 soundtrack) and I want to try and write a piece of music that is kind of like it.

For those who don't have the Metal Gear Solid 3 soundtrack, I will upload it at a later time. Basically, though, it uses a simple main guitar structure with quite a few bends (whammy bar, I think it's called?). The rhythm guitar plays a simple melody of semi-muted strings something like 0-0-3-5 on a tablature.

Finally, once I start getting the music recorded and into an mp3, would anyone here be willing to listen to the music and comment on it?

Welcome Nicholas,

Please feel free to upload your song and solicit comments, you'll find this a very helpful forum. That goes for any questions you may have regarding gear and technique. But please take some time to browse through the archives, it contains the collective wisdom of many talented surf musicians and appreciators.

Legend of Zelda? Sounds like a job for the Meshugga Beach Party. If you decide to use other bands' music, check us out.

About like Joplin's 1890s Ragtime fits a movie on the 1930s (The Sting) or Ry Cooder's Mongolian stuff fit in a movie about the Apache (Geronimo: An American Legend). Joplin was used in The Sting because the director heard some ragtime revival music and liked it (and perhaps had very little idea what music was being played in the 1930s). Or Ry Cooder liked Mongolian throat singing and considered actual Apache music annoying. However, on the bright side, I'm not sure what kind of music would necessarily be authentic for the Legend of Zelda. So, more power to you!

This is a good one to start at.

Well I've managed to write 60's rock. Now for the surf part.

Here are the two 60's rock (sort of) songs I've written:
Passing Time
Mientras Espero

Now... any suggestions on how to make them (or future pieces) more... well... surf-y?

My son was just playing, I think the "archers theme" from Zelda, and I was going to surf it up a bit.
