I don't think that anyone has suggested this but "Dancing In Her Sleep" by The Mermen always stops me in my tracks. To me, THAT'S the way to slow the tempo and still completely enthrall an audience. My 2 cents....

Charade on the Baronics Exposition album is a good cover. Also Pintor on there (covered by lots of surf bands). Exodus too, but that was already mentioned. Cactus by Brazil 2001, more of a Spaghetti Western vibe, but it could give some good ideas. I really like how Unknown Territory by Dick Dale starts slow (will, slow for DD) and just builds and builds. For some reason it reminds a little of Telegraph Road by Dire Straits, another long song that begins slowly taking its time to build to a fantastic crescendo. Road to Blackies by The Fabulous Nomads Shadow Land by The Falcons Black Sea by Insect Surfers King of Hawaii has some great slow surf. Its true that it's easy to get a little one-paced with surf. In fact it's suprising how similar in tempo a lot of surf classics are. I felt we needed something slow in The Pashuns to vary the pace so I wrote one. I don't know whom the original authors are but The Shi-tones play these and Jim Thomas is genius in style with them so here ya go.... Dru Me Negrita is one of those old Cuban songs that Ry Cooder and Manuel Galban did on the the Mambo Sinuendo CD of Cuban "surf" music. I hear it a lot in the background on the local NPR affiliate |

PATRICIA, that's another great one. They used that in the 1935 Dante's Inferno movie with Spencer Tracy while Rita Cansino dances, she later became Rita Hayworth after they pulled out the hairs of her forehead. Sorry for the off topic. |

Hmmm... I think someone already mentioned Sleepwalk. One of my favourites on my iPod is Eric Hutchinson's Surfacing, from the SG101 2005 compilation. Not so danceable, but a nice slow one to chill out to. Somebody was asking about varying the tempos throughout a set. I heard somewhere (could be an urban mythical source) that Muzak for grocery stores will start out with a slow song, and gradually increase the tempo over the next few tunes, and then cycle all over with a slow one. As I understand it, it's supposed to keep customers moving so that they were exposed to a lot of products (and promotional material), but not so fast that they finished shopping too soon. —I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing. |

The Looney Tunes do a song called Wayward Nile, is it the same? I like playing the faster tunes but have writen some slow, maybe even spooky ones. We have some clips on our web site. Is that too much reverb? |
