I'm wondering why the folks that visit here don't vote on the poll... because they haven't noticed it? What I mean is that there are polls from time to time. How do they know that their vote really is needed now?

Brian, maybe have folks cast a vote as part of the login process? It's a mouse-click. The cookie will know they've voted once and won't ask again upon future logins.

Sean's got the right idea, and I have the right event - The Madeira in SoCal. Let's make it happen.

IMHO, this is the first really practical and do-able thing anyone has ever said in these two threads.

Edit: Well BTD had a similar idea.

And you are going to code all that up for me, right? ;)

A poll is not the right way to decide this IMHO. Pick an event, like The Madeira coming back, and organize some side activities around that. It will have to be small. No we can't get Fender, Nokie, or the Tooth Fairy to open a booth. At least not the first year. Smile

Just get a bar or room we can rent to throw a party and/or have a jam session. That's about all we can realistically do. At night we'll go to the Madeira show (or some other band/bands).

No, you really don't want to come to my house.

...I think the poll is a 'real' indicator.

Agree the poll does reveal the depth of interest to some extent...

Well, considering I released their CD and I have yet to see them play live, this is an idea I fully support!

A poll is a great idea, but it'd be nice to be able to choose 2 or 3 of the options - it would give us a clearer idea of what everyone wants. My 3 choices would be:

Surf Instro Festival
Las Vegas
Small to medium

However, I am open to other ideas.

You must include other genres - garage-spook-psych and not limit it to instro - small/medium - vegas or some other west coast spot

Brian & Sean have a good point. If only 30-40 people are actively considering attending an event, then we should really scale it down to something thats doable financially and logistcally. I still like BTDs idea as well. Maybe a merging of these two ideas?

DP! they're adorable!

Dead Thread ...and this thread continues ever-onward Dead Thread

I'd go for these ideas:

Surf Music Convention & Festival
In or near Balboa or the South Bay

or

Instrumental Rock & Roll Convention & Festival (Surf & other types of instro)
Las Vegas

or

Early 60's West Coast Rock & Pop Festival (Surf & other post Rockabilly/pre Beatles sounds)
Somewhere on the SoCal Coast

The Big Tiki Oasis fest in San Deigo is going to have some top name surf bands. But I can't say who now.
but the event is packed full of stuff to do from thurs at 4 pm to mon. morning.
fitting a surf convention in durring that time would irritate the hell out of me, as I wasn't able to do all the stuff on the Itinerary.

*please go back a few pages and look at my idea.
I really think it is the best mix of
live shows, convention, jams, pannels with 1st wavers , pannels with big names. and possibly a movie premire,
I was also thinking we could ask John Blair, and Dominic Priore to do a seminar, or presentation of some sort.

I'm kinda sorry I put up the poll thing, I meant to help not hinder.

There was a time I could have coded up a page for a poll, but I barely even remember where to start now, so I worked with what we had.

The questions may be bad or in a poor sequence leading to the joke response but it was meant in a light hearted way and not to be taken seriously.

I was hoping somebody with more knowledge of the correct questions may have jumped in, and that has happened to a certain degree as I believe we are a few steps closer achieving a result.

However I believe the old standard rule KISS Keep It Simple Stupid. applies to a first time event such as this.

These things have a way of sorting themselves out and I'm positive that the right thing will happen in the right time at the right place. Very Happy

No worries, Spud, it kept the conversation going.

I won't be any use planning or organizing since I am geographically challenged. I would just suggest keeping it simple. I really don't see how some of the things being proposed could get pulled off unless we had a paid staff and a pot of money.

I agree Brian. Some of these ideas for an event would cost a lot of money however the idea I posted way back on another thread would not take much money or a staff.
In Huntington Beach on 3 Aug. there will be 6 surf bands on the beach. All free. When the bands are anounced I think everyone would like to see them
A friday night show at a local pub,Saturday everyone gets together and jams and visits at a rented studio or equal. Saturday night another surf show at a local bar. Cost: Studio & beer Saturday afternoon and door cover at the Friday and Saturday bars..............All day Sunday-free.......

Maui,

That has been your plan form the start. It is logical, makes perfect sense, is the most cost effective and is simple. I know where I'll be and it will not be in Las Vegas.
And for those who think surf city is too boring, check this out. We can party with the best when we are inclined.

I gotta say though, as someone that'd have to fly in, I'd be much more motivated to make the effort and spend the money to come to a big event like Tiki Oasis with "top name surf bands" than a surf convention with 20-40 people and going to free shows at the beach where people are sittin' around munching hot dogs. Looking at last year's Tiki Oasis site, it looks like they have break-out seminars with speakers and Q&A sessions - seems like, given the compatibility of surf music and tiki, that you could have such a session called "Surf Guitar 101", with maybe folks like John Blair and others. On the side we could also have breakfast gatherings and such. It does look like they pack the day quite a bit with Tiki Oasis events, but there are some fairly big gaps in the schedule where we could gather to do our own thing. Doing something like this would totally take the responsibility off our shoulders, leaving us as members of SG101 to take it upon ourselves to buy tickets and book hotel accomodations. Any thoughts on something like this?

What I like about Sean's suggestion (other than Tiki Oasis is in San Diego Wink ) is that it piggy backs off an already established and organized event. That would require much less work from us and leaves us to focus on only organizing the surf guitar 101 related activities.

The trick would be getting Tiki Oasis to buy into this and support what we're trying to do...

I can't promise anything, but I used to work a bit with Otto (Tiki News) and I could talk to him about the idea. I think on their end it'd be beneficial, since it would bring more people in and it would give them a seminar to add to their schedule. I'll see what kinda feedback this idea gets over the next few days, and if it's positive I'll get in touch with Otto.
