Tim, you mentioned this movie a couple of times now - could you please tell us more about it? What exactly is it, who's in it, who's doing it, how big of a budget does it have, when will it be released, how wide of a release?
It sounds very exciting - if it's what I think it is!
Thanks!
Ivan

I was fortunate to invited by the producer to come to their studio and watch as they edited one day recently. The footage I saw was fantastic. FANTASTIC... Lots of archival footage as well as interviews with the legends you would expect... and more. It's an independent film but the production quality is very high. The producer is in Hawaii right now shooting. I think everyone will be very pleased when they see it.
I just spoke to the producer. He likes the idea of a local showing so cal showing/preview and after, live performances by some of the legends from the film.
Can't really say anything else other than stay tuned for details.

Can't wait for the details! My imagination is running wild!
BTW, I REALLY hope that the movie has more than just perfunctory acknowledgment of the fact that surf music continues to live on around the world and that the last 15 years have been especially fertile, with bands like the Surf Coasters, the Bambi Molesters and the Treble Spankers in particular garnering a lot of attention in their countries. I very much hope it won't be all about the first wave, and oh yeah, some young bands have been playing this stuff since then, isn't that cute.
Just had to get that off my chest.

My feeling is that the producer wants to be as inclusive as possible. Time, distance and money are the practical limiting factors.

That's understandable - but does that mean only SoCal surf bands, whether vintage or modern, will be getting any mention?
I don't think that would do the surf music scene justice.

Ivan,
I cant really answer that at this point. Obviously your band deserves a significant mention for your role in the genre. I the producer wants to be as inclusive as absolutely possible.

Tim, it's really not about me. (REALLY!) It's just that there have been SO MANY great surf bands all around the world in the last 15-20 years and it would be a shame to reduce that down to one sentence in the documentary. I think everyone knows that though I'm a surf musician, I'm first and foremost a huge fan, and I would like to see some more recognition go to all the talented people out there that do it because it's their passion - and that do as good or better of a job than many first wave legends.
Though I completely understand about the practical difficulties.

Hopefully Europe and Japan won't be ignored - there are more people going to surf shows in those countries than here in the US. The Kilaueas played to about 200 people when I saw them in Dresden a few years ago, yet on their US tour they played to about 25-50% of that total each night. I know several US bands have gone over there (Europe) and played some wild, packed shows. I'd say about 1/3 of the Double Crown orders I get are from outside the US as well.

I totally agree. There is so much great modern surf out there. It shouldn't result in a footnote.
