The response started a war  ......... No Not Really...
I think it is a sheer matter of cost. It's down to OC or LV.
My thoughts are that connections help. If we have a good connection to a venue/hall/room and can get a deal, then we should lean toward that. Bothe locations have there strong points. More ledgends in OC, better laws in LV.
I worry about pairing this event with any other event. Same time? maybe, but not 'along with'. It will cause too many problems. Can't pay bands. That is a reality of the situation. SG101 guys who have bands will have to bring their bands. We would have to put our heads together and find some other venues to make it woth our while. I have a band. We would come... and I know damn well we can't get paid. Bummer but true.
I bet we could find several gigs to help cover $...
either location works for me.
Maybe Tom Ingram should see this...

I don't think Tom Ingram will do anything but rockabilly for the foreseeable future - he tried to branch out with the Las Vegas Grind and Rockaround fests - they started out strong but went out with a wimper (sadly, I didn't go to either of the Grinds, but went to both of the Rockarounds - had a blast, but the shows were only about 1/3 full). I think what some of us (including myself) are kinda envisioning with Vegas is a Las Vegas Grind style fest, with more of a surf focus, but also including bands that naturally fit in with the surf scene (I'm thinking along the lines of Deadbolt, The Bomboras, Deke Dickerson, Barbary Coasters, etc.) I'm stoked by the mere suggestion that the Huntington Cads would possibly reform for a gig in Vegas - perhaps we can convince Ted to bring Satan's Pilgrims too - what a double bill that would be!!!
In my opinion the place to start is put together a show, either one night or two nights, in an established indoor venue with 3-4 bands per night, bands with a draw and have some connection with the SG101 community, ideally. Sounds like someone here has connections in Vegas too.
I have to say, an outdoor beach show like the photo posted here, or the ones I saw with the Kilaueas, do not get me excited in the least. A bunch of people chillin' on the grass, listening to the music and people watching, munching on a hot dog, etc. Here in Bellingham we have outdoor concerts at our university, public parks and library's that look like that scene. I am much more excited by a scene like Zak's photo - with all of the interest on this list, it seems like if the bands and other events were enticing enough, we could get 100-150 people going. Put that many people in a club that holds 250 or so, plus add some locals, and I think it all adds up to what you see in Zak's photo. If Vegas is considered, I'd say somewhere downtown or the Double Down would be ideal. Once the show, or shows, are booked and the bands decided, I think it's pretty simple to work out places to have a meeting (any wedding or conference room would work), have cocktails - there's now a Trader Vic's in Vegas!, take over a poker table or two, etc.
If we go in the direction of California, I think the same philosophy would work - find a venue, find the bands, book the show, then book everything around the schedule of the show or shows.
However, I notice Brian hasn't really stuck his head into this conversation - as the owner of this site I think he should have some say on this!

Beautiful idea. I think sticking in the more garage 60s psycho bands would only make the people you see in Zak's picture show up. If I was playing this show I'd rather do it in Vegas infront of the psychobilly kids than out on a beach with the straw hat/lawn chair crowd.
Wouldn't this essentially be like the Vegas Grind? I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but there's gotta be a reason why that never took off.

It was built to be big. I went to a bunch of those. They were awesome, but never quite got big. Tom Ingram doesn't play around. He usually goes all out. ie a couple of stages... tons of bands/vendors/help. He racks up a lot of expense. We would need to start quite a bit smaller than that. Simple 1 large room for the day, bar for a show at night. Or do both the same place. Lots of activities is a must.

More thoughts.....
IMO, with no offense directed at any band, I think keeping the show strictly dedicated to <u>surf</u> is important -otherwise it will devolve into just an 'instrumental' convention.
Not being close to an ocean (Pacific or Atlantic) to impart the surfing vibe just doesn't feel right to me. I understand the Vegas thing and the points made to having it there but.. the proximity of the ocean I think adds mega-vibe to the atmosphere that ought to be considered.

Ground Zero works... But we have to keep the surf/garage thing. My band loves surf, but also adds vocals to our stuff. Would hate to be blackballed. Keep the heavy reverb theme...

Somehow, when I saw this post originally, I envisioned a long weekend somewhere hanging out, jamming with new and old friends, some somewhat organized bands' performances, beer drinking......what have you. A far less formal affair. A great time for we.....who love this music, to build a stronger organization and network.........ed

I can understand Brian's silence...he's not a promoter. Hosting this site doesn't compare to the logistics of organizing a convention...it wasn't even his idea. I think he's done more than enough by bringing us together here, and no one needs to leave home to share ideas and info.
Kyle's original idea was to have a Convention, and that does not mean lining up a bunch of acts...that would be just another surf music show so I wouldn't expect many new faces.
Whoever said start small had the best advice. If it's good it will grow on its own.

OK idea here.
if its a convention, and not a big weekend show, like for LV Grind or etc.
I say we mix the convention with shows all ready happening.
there will be 3 big HB pier shows on Sundays this year.
schedule should be posted soon.
what if we do the Convention thing on a Sat. afternoon, the day before.
so.
a. Fri. people show up meet at a tiki bar( or any bar) and drink and talk, meet up.
b. Sat. Surf convention 10 am to 6 pm at a BigRestaurant in a banquet room., vendors welcome( Dario, Double Crown, etc...)
which entails eating drinking, meeting, a small stage for jams. seminars.
c. Sat. nite. go to a surf show of local surf bands.( they usually happen)
d. Sun. go to HB Pier surf show from 11 am to 5 pm. talking and such is allowed its outside so your not going to annoy anybody.
e. Sun. Evening hang out after either at the beach. or go to the restaurant from the day before.
- Sam's Seafood in Sunset Beach about 5 miles North of HB pier would be ideal. Good food, tiki drinks and beer, and great atmosphere, and
back banquet room that holds about 200 and has stage for the jams.
whaddya think?

I agree.
That's the way I thought an SG 101 Convention would be conducted. If I wanted to go see a show, I would go. Meeting, jamming, socializing, BS'ing, drinking, partying, sharing ideas, licks and equipment, and enhance the camaraderie of SG101 members was my idea of an SG101 Convention.
It doesn't have to be a big production with mega star bands. That is unless they want to 'donate' their time and energy. All proceeds garnered should go to paying expenses and anything left over would go to promoting the next SG101 Convention to make it even bigger and better.
If it's just going to be a get together to go see some bands play and pay a cover charge, hell, we can do that anytime.
Colorado sounds fine to me. I've been to conventions and seminars of various sorts all over the continental US and there are always exciting new places to go. For example the best "blues fest' I've attended was in Council Bluff Iowa. Went to one on Beale Street in Memphis (the home of the blues) and learned that we have better blues fest here in (country western capital of the west) Bakersfield California. I don't buy into all that 'stuff' about having to have a surf convention on the beach. It's where the interest is and where we can get the biggest turn out of SG101 members that matters.

also Im off work on Mondays so if anybody wanted to stay in town, I could
do a tour of some of the cool So. Cal. historical sites.
The Wedge,and DD's old Mansion,
where the Rendevous used to be
the Retail Clerks Hall in Buena Park
some tiki places,
Oceanic arts. in Whittier
Bahooka in Rosemead
etc. etc.
My Bro in Law has a Hot Rod shop
and its a mix of old Hot Rod, surf, skate, and tiki history.
its near So. Cal. speed.
and There is also the mooneyes shop.
