Vegas, hands down would be the best location.
Sorry SoCal but VLV is in Vegas despite the fact that rockabilly pretty much started in Memphis.

Some thoughts... (1) I believe hands down, just for logistics, the venue should be in SoCal. it's a bummer I know for everyone else but fact is many bands are here. Many legends are here. (2) Indoor gig only unless you want to play in the desert. The permit approval process could be a PITA. Not to mention, if there are irate business owners/neighbors that go nuts the cops WILL step in. I'm not a cop but maybe HBKahuna could give his insight on that one. Also, indoor gigs (American legion, etc.) will most likely be outfitted with restrooms and possibly stages, power, lighting, etc. Lugging around a bunch of bulbs and generators sucks. An indoor venue may also have areas dedicated toward food service and dining. Trash receptacles most likely will be a plenty and help to keep things clean and orderly. (3) Somebody will have to step up and be THEE "promoter" and do the necessary legwork to organize and find capital. Advertising isn't cheap and the time involved not trivial. I say that ONE person should do this only because IMHO too many chiefs will derail this event and the consequences would be disastrous. This isn't meant to be a downer but I have worked with people in team capacities all my life (as many here have) and this has 99% been the case. Someone has to be the alpha dog and direct and others have to take direction-otherwise mayhem will ensue. There is tremendous potential for this but even at a small level IMHO it has to be organized for minimal headaches and successful enough to warrant a future event. If the first bash becomes a nightmare, where's the incentive to do another one? Do it right for the first one and you'll get people motivated, confident and inspired for subsequent ones. — |

Outdoor gigs are no biggie. We do them all the time here. Just get the proper permit you are good to go. DD recently played on the beach in Newport by the old Rendezvous Ballroom. Not one complaint. Events like this bring in business so complaints are unlikely. Plenty of decent indoor venues too. Some really good ones in fact & I'm not talking bars. Sounds like most would rather do this in vegas rather than build it around a movie premier, hang & jam with the first wave legends. I think that is a bit short sighted but thats just me. All I can say is have fun in vegas. |

If I were involved, I would personally make sure all the bands were paid... My reputation is golden and I can provide references if needed... |

Can you play at 3am to a crowd of a couple thousand people in SoCal? Paul |

I'm Hesitant to say that I would like to Help with this, as there seems to be so indecision over stuff. I would rather see it here in So. Ca. too. Depending on who the bands were if it were in Vegas I would probably go. I would think if it was here in So. Ca. some of us locals could put up a band for the weekend to help with accommodations costs. and maybe also drive them around/ to the gigs. and I am (assuming) here, but I would think that the Local bands that played, would probably be willing to take a smaller slice of the pie, as their costs would be way less. and I would hope that local bands would be willing to provide a killer backline of amps and drums so the whole show could go smoothly, and less time for band changeover. my 2 cents. ...a movie premier would be very cool...which movie will premier? i guess I missed that part. i agree that there should be a single promoter to head the team. Perhaps, nominations are in order? Once we decide on a leader, then maybe a location would follow? Seems like the top three locations so far are: SoCal, Vegas and Brian's place in Iowa...right? Any more location ideas out there? |

I live between two Dicks (no lie: Dick M. to the east and Dick S. to the west)...but if the Dicks are cool with it...well...I do have an ice chest, a charcoal grill and 1/2 acre of mojave desert wasteland... Last edited: Jan 25, 2008 15:04:01 |
