My favorite band has to be Lost Acapulco , it's a surf-garage band from Mexico ( www.myspace.com/lostacapulko ), I also like the Satan's Pilgrims, Los Straitjackets, The Cavernarios, The Bomboras, Los Kahunas, Los Coronas, Phantom Surfers, Ghastly Ones, Dynotones, Dick Dale (of course), Meshugga Beach Party, The Mummies, Tijuana Bibles, The Ventures, The Chantays, The Shadows, Reluctant Aquanauts, Evan Foster, Cocktail Preachers, Twin Tones and a ton of other great bands. ![Rock Rock](/media/smiley/images/icon_rock.gif)

My two all time 60s surf bands would be Eddie and the Showmen and the Trashmen. It would be a tough choice but I think the Trashmen beat out the Showmen.
For 90s bands it's tough to beat the Treblemakers and the Bomboras.

I've got to say Laika and the Cosmonauts all the way.
Man or Astroman? has deeply influenced me as well, but I don't really view them in the surf spectrum.

For me, it's The Ghastly Ones. The Madeira/Space Cossacks are a close second. It's a very close second, too. I mean, when I've seen The Madeira live, I always say to myself, 'okay, this is the best group I've ever heard.' The Ghastly Ones started it all for me, though, so I'll still stick with them.

From the 60's, T H E V E N TU R E S!!!!!!!!!!!!
whatever they say! hehe!
And of course Dick Dale! Also the Astronauts(only the instros), Chantays, Challengers, Surfaris, etc.......

Hard to pick one favourite because there are so many incredible musicians I look up to, but I'd probably have to say Hank Marvin because he's the reason I decided to pick up a guitar and try to play Apache. That was before I ever heard of "surf music". Through The Shadows I got into The Ventures, then Dick Dale etc etc etc...

From the 60's, that would definitely be the team Gary Usher put together, Richard Podolor in particular. That guy sounded like nobody else, and his playing was incredibly tasteful.
Modern bands, the freaking Apemen! And if I feel a little bit mellower, The Fathoms.

Favorite "pure" SURF band: Eddie and the Showmen.
Favorite instrumental band: The Ventures
Favorite contemporary band: Los Straitjackets
Favorite players: now that would be a longer list, and filled up with old time country / rockabilly players...

I'm opening this one back up.....
LAIKA & THE COSMONAUTS is probably one of the best bands I've ever heard.
Los Coronas, The Atlantics and Los Straitjackets are way up on the list as well.
I've been really hot on Sterophonic Space Sound Unlimited (I would be hard pressed to call them a "surf" band, but they do some really 'surfy' stuff, and are all mood, atmosphere and creativity.... I love em!)

Well, the Title of this Thread says:
"Who's Your All Time Favorite Surf Band, Musician, Etc.
As mentioned in a few posts of this Thread, The Ventures NEVER
really were a Surf Band, they even have said that themselves.
However, they were there when all Hell broke loose with the Surf /
Instrumental Band sound. Therefore, they were typecast as a Surf/
during their Heyday. They also recorded Psychedelic, Motown, Funk,
and just about every other style of music that was erupting during
the 60's. BUT, they got locked into the Surf Style since the Majority
of Surf Music WAS instrumentals. I know, there were other Vocal
Surf Bands, but not many (and the Beach Boys don't count! LOL!).
OK, now that I got that out of the way I will say that I believe the
Ventures would have to be in this category as far as Surf Band goes.
They were one of the first (R&R,Surf) Bands to set the stage for
for every band to follow, with Front Album Covers (having pix taken
of them w/instruments, although they didn't for their 1st Album WDR,
they did on WDR Vol II). They were the first band to use a FUZZ/DISTORTION Unit (Stompbox) as credited by Jimmy Page, they
just did a lot of "Firsts", that over time, people seemed to of forgotten, or didn't care anymore, or at least some of my older cousins have told me that.
Single Performer? DICK DALE. ANY QUESTIONS?? I don't think so.
He IS the FATHER of SURF.....enough said......and as far as the ETC goes, I haven't seen ANYONE respond to this, but how about some of the people BEHIND the scenes, that are forgotten about over the years?? People
that were "first" at doing what they did best? Producer/engineers???
OK, I tied this up long enough, so my so-called nominations would be....
SURF BAND----------------the Ventures
SURF FATHER--------------Dick Dale
SURF PRODUCER-(ETC)--Joe Meek

I am going a little more obscure and saying it's a toss up between The Hypnotic IV and The Infrareds.
Of course, I love SP, the Ghastlies, The Bomboras, Pollo, Slacktone, the Madeira, and many of the others who have been mentioned here, but those other two bands have albums that I can listen to all the time any time, which says a lot.
~B~
Gotta love the Ghastly Ones and the Bombora's.... Super Sick
Also love the Mummies.
As for 1st wave... Astronauts all the way!

It's the Ventures and Los Straits for me.
I tend to like the Ventures covers of other famous surf tunes at least as well as the originals (or more famous versions). Those guys could (and can still) play.
But I just can't seem to get enough of Los Straitjackets. Their creativity just kills me.
