Permalink Surf Guitar 101 Convention?

I don't want to sound too discouraging, however........

Unfortunately I think that beach photo pretty much sums up how much interest there is in instrumental Surf music by the general public. Check out all the people on the beach and on the pier. They are all over the place except where the music is being played. I think those sitting are just taking a break from walking along the beach.

Recently I started talking to people about organizing a surf band to play some local venues. They readily agreed it would be really cool to hear and sing along with the Beach Boy's type of vocals, but turned up their noses when I mentioned instrumental surf music. They tell me about 3 or 4 instrumentals is all they could handle. Maybe others have had a better experience, but I think it is a small audience that would appreciate such a venue when thinking of support from the general public.

Any type of 'shindig' catering to and supported by members of Surf Guitar 101 web site would be a fun gathering regardless of where it is held. I would definitely make an effort to attend.

Some of the HB Pier shows get a good turnout, but those there for the music are always outnumbered by those there for the beach. However, 90% of those sitting in the pic are there for the bands.

-Warren (in front of the sidewalk, to the left of the dude in the pink shirt)

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Zak,
the young type of people that are in the pic that you posted,
are not interested in surf here in So. Cal.
they all go to clubs and listen to dj's play hip hop.

there are 1000's of clubs with every kind of music imaginable.
without money to promote surf, it will always be obscure music here in
So. Cal.

If the TrebleMakers did a show at a club, by your self, with no other bands.
how many people would come.
I bet the fast sales has to do with the diversity of the bill.

The Bomboars reunion show on New years eve was pretty packed.
But the Bill had tons of Garage bands on it.

same for the Insect Surfers 20th anniversary show.
a Garage band, Davie Allan , and a proto punk/instro band, with
3 surf bands Insects,Boardwalkers, and CHUM at Safari Sams in LA, that show was about 200 people.

it all depends on who, where, when, and Why the show is.
as to how the turnout is. Its freaking hot in the sun,
everybody wants to sit and chill not slam up against the stage at the Museum. Its not a club gig.

most surf shows are in bars,
the surf museum shows are fundraisers for the Museum, and the bands donate their time to the museum.
the crowd at the museum can be between 30 to 200.
the shows at the pier can be between 100 to 1000 people.

there are tons of blues shows here, that are outdoors and people sit just like that.
plus alot of the bands here are older hawiian shirt bands playing covers,
so the crowd is not going to jump around like they would at your show.

its apples and oranges man,

Im saying that most of the young people here are not into rockabily and surf,
and the rockabilly people here dont really know or care about surf that much. they will sit thru a band if at a show with the bands they wanna see.
but the Rockabilly crowd will not wanna go see just a surf band, not even the Bomboras.

100 to 200 people,
what do you do offer then Crack or BJ's after the show?
you are a true promoter man,

tons of hawiian shirt bands bad?
you bet, I wish there was more bands like yours here.
Thats why Kristena and I and some friends wanna start one soon.

Man, I'm old. been out of the scene way too long.

The Surf crowd and the Rockabilly crew at one point were very connected in L.A. (80's and 90's) , in thanks to folks like Robert Douglas (KXLU)with his bookings at Jacks Sugar Shack. his infamous "Surfabilly" nights featuring a Surf band and a Rockabilly band, were a blast. Ronnie Mack's barndance would have a surf band along at the Palimino quite often and of course Jim Dunfrund's (KXLU) tireless promotion of all instro/surf music was a help also. Art Feins poker party had surf bands on alot as well.

Do we not promote like we once did?

This has turned into a bit of a thread derail but I vote for Vegas and having a mix of Surf/ Garage /60's punk for the convention.

This may give people a more accurate idea what the HB Pier Venue is like. Keep in mind 3/4 the viewing area is behind the camera.

I thought I had been following this topic fairly close but I guess I missed it somewhere along the way. Has it been established: Who is going to be in charge (promoter) make this event happen?

Once it is determined who will be responsible for coordinating a convention, then decide where and what type of event it will be.

Facilities cost money regardless of where it happens. Someone will have to throw down some 'front' money somewhere along the way. Depending on how much the public would be involved. Even if held in a public park there could be permits and in some cities licensing fees and sometimes security required. A manager or promoter would have to determine what would be required wherever the event is held.

On the other hand, if an event should occur in a city such as Las Vegas, then all arrangements would be coordinated through the hotels public relation manager and advise them,

  1. The date and the type of activity.
  2. Approximate number of people attending.
  3. How many guest rooms need to be reserved.
  4. How many seminar rooms will be needed.

In addition,

  1. Will a large convention hall be needed?
  2. Will there be floor space needed for vendors?
  3. Will the vendors be required to obtain resale permits or temporary licenses?

Once these questions are answered then all of this can be handled (usually) through the hotels public relation and convention coordinator. Having assisted in coordinaing a couple conventions and seminar's over the years, I can tell you it is a lot simpler to go to Las Vegas. Their laws are less stringent.

Just my two cents worth.

If we follow Maui's suggestion on page 6 or 7, this would be a pretty simple event. No hotel or convention hall would be needed.

diceophonic
enough of the negative bullshit

Last time I checked, "_discussion_" meant an exchange of ideas and opinions, regardless of whether they strike you as positive or negative. The day I want to hear only the "positive" I'll get a Prozac prescription, thankyouverymuch. Rolling Eyes

You're absolutely right this is a "_discussion_" and all points of view and or feedback are valid. This is how we can figure out what folks dig and what might not work. So back to the ideas.

Just a thought: A local film producer (SoCal.) has used a couple of our tunes in his surf flicks, and has a new one due out soon. Coordinate the bands with a film debut and get both crowds if you want to open it up. We're in S. Florida where no-one gets the music, our Mai Kai gigs draw a couple of hundred, but 40 or 50 is what were used to. I'd make the trip in a heartbeat to hang with some of the first wave. Vegas just doesn't say surf like Huntington.

Now there is an idea. I will discuss with the producer & get some feedback... Then again from what I'm seeing sound more like people want to go to vegas rather than build a sg101 event around a a movie premier on the history of surf music & hang with some first wave legends where the whole thing started.. All I can say is have a great time in vegas...

I saw a rough cut of the trailer. FANTASTIC!

Hey Boardwalker Jeff!
Great to have a Cad chime in!
Maybe you could start your own thread letting everyone know you're here? I'm afraid your introduction may have been lost in this discussion. Very Happy
