Does it not happen that people/bands play a set or two just for the hell and fun of it. It's the fun of getting together that matters and not the money?
Sure, if you have a "regular" job that you rely on as your primary source of income! For anyone who relies on music as their source of income, making a long trip across the country to play for free isn't really an option.
Think of it as a holiday you two, you do pay for holidays don't you or are they worked into a touring schedule for 'working' musicians.
I don't know, so I guess I'll STFU.

I can't afford a holiday. Also, there are 5 people in my band. Ever try getting 5 people to travel somewhere they may not want to go and make them pay for it?

Your points are taken and valid, but it is what you choose to do for a living, hell I can think of a hundred worse ways to make a dollar.
Trying sticking your whole arm up somebody's sewer pipe to pull out an obstruction on a stinking rot hot day sweating your guts out feeling like you want to puke everywhere and at the same time you have to smile and say 'Ah here's the trouble Mrs Jones, no problem now, I'll have all cleaned up in a jiffy'
That's just an example and in no way does it reflect the mood or opinion of the author.
I envy you guys.
Added to the above - I think we may have hijacked the thread.

1 2 & 3 August 2008 in Huntington Beach. The easy choice. The Huntington beach international surf museum will have the "Surfin' Sunday" on the beach with 6 great bands starting at 11:00AM until dark. That would leave Friday night for a show, Saturday for studio jams and workshops with the legends, Saturday night for another show and all day Sunday on the beach watching Surf Bands.
I have a tenitive line up for Sufin' Sunday but I'm not sure if it is confirmed yet. Some really good bands, I know that for sure and in the process you will be supporting the museum...................

I don't make music for a living. I don't make any money off of it. All the money goes to the band fund. I can't afford to go anywhere because I am finishing up with college, and therefore work half time, and I need to find a real job, place to live, etc...

speaking as a new jerseyan, it's completely obvious this event would have to take place in southern california; nowhere else makes any sense.
oh -- great idea, by the way! it's a shame no one thought of this LAST year, when i wasn't so damn house-poor!

Yeah, thats the rotten thing about the HB Pier shows. You can have 3 times as many people and still have some personal space, a place to sit if you want, get some sun & fresh air to breathe. Its terrible.

I vote for Vegas. it's kitchy and adds a hint of glamour to a music fest.
We (Huntington Cads) did a Las Vegas festival thing for Estrus records. was fun. I know the 'grind' thing is doing well, or whatever it's called now. shakedown?
Like the idea of mixing the bands up a bit. some garage and maybe 60's psyc...
The Tikitones and Boardwalkers did a cool thing that Otto put on called Exoticon. had vendor booths and bands playing on 2 stages. I had a booth with my ex (Pamita) and made a killing selling Esqivel records and junk out of my garage. I like the vendor thing.
This is a great idea and hopefully you all can make it happen.
I was on the Surfari USA thing (filled in for Dusty, man I had a great time). was a blast but a financial nightmare.
If it's Vegas it would be a good venue for the much bantied-about Huntington Cads reunion...
Promotion will be the key.
Oh, hi everyone I'm Jeff.
