Permalink R.I.P. Rex Gregory of the Zakary Thaks

Rex Gregory of the Zakary Thaks passed away over the weekend. I had the honor of meeting Rex a few years back and to hang out with him for a bit on a few occasions. He was a great guy - always warm and welcoming and full of great stories about the old South Texas days. Growing up in South Texas, The Thaks - though a few years ahead of my time- were always a great source of inspiration for me. For those who may be unfamiliar with the Zakary Thaks, they were a teen garage band outta Corpus Christi TX, whose first single "Bad Girl" b/w "I Need You" stands tall as a prime example of mid-60's teen punk. Great band. In recent years, they had reunited for a few well received performances. Anyhow, just thought I'd pass the news...... Sad

Thanks MG,
I'm a big fan. Their color films of them performing are a rare glimpse of what garage looked like in color. Great band.
RIP

Yes, great footage! From what I understand, they shot it very early in the morning after an out of town gig.

Definitely one of my favorite garage bands, first time I heard "Bad Girl" I was absolutely floored, and floored again when I learned it was recorded 40+ years ago by a bunch of teenagers. At that age I was in my room practicing Metallica songs from tab books...they were creating amazing tunes that would survive for decades.
Those clips on youtube are discussed in the liner notes of their comp, I was really glad they finally showed up on youtube awhile back.
I'm sorry to hear of his passing.
-Ted
