BTW, that's just my interpretation of the "waves", and there is still great debate about whether we are in a 4th wave or not. I don't really think so myself.

Serpico, the challenge is for all the current bands (who are so inclined to) to find some way to differentiate ourselves from previous generations of surf bands. In such a way as to bring some critical and public approval. So those of you who don't want to be just a classic surf covers band, aim high! That's how we'll get out of the 3rd trough and catch that 4th wave.

The last issue of Vintage Guitar Magazine featured Dave Wronski, and the current issue has articles on the Spotniks and Bob Spalding, AKA the fifth Venture.
Surf music seems to be making a splash, if not a full blown wave once again.

Since I was just a kid in the 90´s and when Pulp Fiction came out and I was not even aware of that there was a musicstyle called Surf then. For me the previous generation is band like Robert Johnson & Punchdrunks, Urban Surf Kings, Bomboras, The Del-Vamps, Barbwires and so on..and it was band such as these that got me into playing surf. so it feels a bit weird to "be" in the same wave as these guys. after all they are our inspiration. and not to mention probably alot older;)

I wouldnt worry about any of this wave crap.....My advice is to play what you like and try to do it the best you can. Be the artist not the critic. There are so called first wavers that were great in their day...but just rest on their laurels and dont do much for music today. There are so called 3Rd wavers whose music kicks the crap out of any a second waver(yes the hippy stink, disco freak, and cocaine fiend was alot to recover from to get this show back on the road). Good surf music has no time boundry...old is played on radios along side the new and vice versa....
Just play and record something new (not a cover), get it heard and your in.
People who lack creativity or success sit around and debate this crap ....so they can feel part of the doers.

I agree. I like the idea of developing your own surf style and later seeing where it fits in the remainder of the general surf context. Don't try and constrain your self to a particular label (be it 1st wave, psychedelic, heavy, etc) before you start.

But I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Everyone is free to offer their opinion on how they view surf as a whole. And why simply dismiss all the non-playing surf fans?

I think the explanation Brian gave just about sums it up. That's very much the general consensus. A while back Ferenc made an interesting and valid argument for this currently being the fourth wave, with the third having ended... I can't remember when. But the take home message was that this is the fourth wave because there's is currently less experimentation and psychedelia than the third, and that surf has sort of gone "back to the basics" with a more modern twist. (Or maybe Ferenc didn't say that. I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth.)
I'm a big fan of all three waves and just about all the subgrenres, but my heart lies most with the third wave (and I guess the fourth, depending on who you ask).

Hmm. Well, maybe I'm the statistical outlier, being an aspiring doer.
And Serpico, I finally listened to your myspace tunes. I like them, especially Thunderlips and Still Fat and Hungry. Great title too!
