surfy enough?:)
Leo Fender's creation...look and sound awsome as for me
great wood, especially swamp ash in some models, light and bright in sound
Legacy is a nice strat-like one...but to my surprise it isn't a strat clone - it's another guitar...Comanche is stunning, great for rich surf-rock tones

somehow desliked their tele-like stuff

just tried a couple of them in the shop...liked a lot...thinking of buying one

any experience?

I played one in the shop. It was one of the higher end models. I believe some sort of Legacy (1,100 price range) Anyway, I was not all that impressed with it. Grant it I was not playing it through my choice of amps.

I did not care for the trem system at all. I am not sure what woods it was made from, but I was not thrilled with the neck and finger board. It was set up very good though, and easy to play. Sound wise, it is hard to judge, because I played it through a lousy crate amp and some cheapo marshall combo.

I reccomend you seek one out and try it before you go buying on ebay or something. Some people swear by these guitars. So there most be some appeal.

I picked up one of the Tribute Legacy models on closeout from Buffalo Bros. Guitars earlier this year and have been 100% impressed - so much so that I'd say the Tribute line are just about the best value going for guitars under $500 or so.

Swamp ash body, great construction, fit and finish, decent hardware and great feel.

The biggest thing they have over other guitars in this price range - particularly Fenders - is that the pickups are USA pickups and sound absolutely fantastic!

Also, the Legacy has a couple key things that make it much better than a strat, in my opinion. First is the vibrato system - it's much beefier and has a more solid feel than a strat's, plus there is a tiny set screw for the trem arm tension, so you can tighten it down to where the arm stays where you put it, rather than do the limp dangle thing. Very nice for quick vibrato grabs. I've also found it to be very stable, tuning-wise. And I prefer the Tribute's vibrato to that on the USA Legacies, which have a more severe bend in the arm, causing it to stick out further from the body of the guitar.

The other reason is the tone controls - I never understood why strats had the two tone pots wired like they do. G&Ls use one tone for treble, the second for bass, and it's awesome. Made a believer out of me, as you have a much wider tonal range to work with.

I played a USA-made Legacy in a store - in surf green, no less - and was completely impressed, especially as someone who's never really gotten on with strat-style guitars. I took a gamble on buying the Tribute from Buffalo Bros, and am an avowed convert to G&L. Fantastic guitars at any price, and especially for what you pay on the Tribute models.

For my money, it's the best choice for a surf guitarist that's just starting out, or someone who wants a quality backup or strat-style tone without spending a ton of cash.

Also, I'm not huge on looks, but the 3-tone sunburst mine came in was very well done.

Here is my story I just sold two of my three guitars one
was a 350V63 Rickenbacker and the other was a Steinberger
GR4. Now I had some cash and I wasn't looking to buy another
guitar I was with a friend who was looking for keyboards for his
wife. We went to one of our local music store and he looked and
didn't see anything he liked. Then he say's lets go to this other
store and I said fine so we get there and as I walked in I saw two
Tele's next to each other one was a Fender and the other was a
G&L Asat Classic. I picked up the Fender first and the neck did not
have a good feel to it felt like a baseball bat. Then I picked up the
G&L and that neck felt great so I played it thru a Fender Amp. The
strings were old but it sounded great so I asked them to put a hold
on the guitar for a couple of days. Two days latter I went back and
bought the G&L Asat Classic Cool It has the three bolt neck and the
body is Swamp Ash with a Natural Finish and a Maple Neck. I bought
this guitar Used and it was in mint shape and I think it was made back
in 93. My other guitar that I kept was my Gretsch 6128TBEE Duo Jet
which is Pre Fender. My Amp is also new its a reissue 59 Fender
Bassman LTD and I also play Surf Music and the G&L just sings thru
my Amp and the same for my Gretsch. Very Happy

Last week when I was helping my buddy Wallace Reed at his music store, a G&L ASAT Bluesboy Tribute series (made in Indonesia) came in via a customer who wanted to consign it for resale. I'm a dyed in the wool Fender guy but I gotta tell you, if I had been in the market for an affordable Tele, I believe I would have snatched this one up. It had a great neck profile, was beautifully made and sounded great. It had a satin finish neck which I normally don't care for, but the fretwork was so nicely done and the action was so good that after 5 minutes of playing it, I didn't care.

This was the first G&L I ever played, and if this one is any indication, they are definitely worth looking into.

Eddie Katcher used to have a nice looking G&L Legacy back in the early days of the X-Rays, but he sold it...I guess because it wasn't a white Jazzmaster. Confused Actually, I think it was because it wasn't "period correct" enough.

G&Ls are great. If you want one that has more of a vintage fender vibe check out the george fullerton signature model. The specs are more old fender friendly. I've gotten rid of all my SSOs (strat shaped objects) since getting into offsets, but for anyone who thinks they can't get a good sound out of a strat try a G&L. It's that damn lack of rolloff on the treble pickup that makes the strat so hard to handle. The G&L volume/tone control system gives you tons of control over all pickups and pickup combinations.

I've gained lots of respect for AVRI and better fenders over the last couple years. I would love a 50s or early 60s AVRI strat, but just don't need one. But if I did need one, I would probably just find a $500 to $700 used USA legacy. Or an S500 if you like hot pickups... S500s are monsters if you play out of amps that don't start with an "F" Rock

Thanx everyone!

I had a possibility to test several G&L models - Comanche, Invader, several ASAT models

Very nice instruments, well done, great wood and furniture, interesting sounding, sometimes unusual...

Wanted to order ASAT semi-holllow with bigsby, but tried one (without bigsby) - and somehow felt that it's not for me

I like Fenders better, that's the point...very subjective, cause objectively G&L are better, even comparing to Deluxe or AVRI series

So, I bought a Gretsch G6118T annie insted... Shocked

I have numerous high end guitars. I recently purchased a used G&L Comanche and it rocks. This guitar has incredible workmanship and versatility. I highly recommend them. Thx, Big Mike

Just joined this forum and really like what I see. I've been playing a G&L Legacy since about 2001 and really like it a lot. Once you have it properly set up, the feel of the neck is very comfortable, the tone is excellent, the vibrato is better than Fender's, so I can't think of much to criticize. Old Leo could have just retired I guess but instead he chose to make guitars like in the old days, before CBS etc. I'd highly recommend them and, if you're in SoCal, get one from Buffalo Bros, the finest guitar store I've found.

The middle pickup on my S-500 is surfy as all get-out. To my ear it just nails it.

I love that guitar, and it's "just" a Tribute model.

Swing! Twang! Shake! Twist!

i always did want a commanche, though i'm kind of bored with strat shaped guitars.
