That wasn't the song I had in mind, he actually has one called Surf Epic that is the closest he ever came to actual surf music. As the name implies, it is also long. He later revived the melody and added words on one of his Frank Black and the Catholics CDs, it didn't really help. |

I would love to hear Brian Setzer do some all-out surf music. He may be the best all-around rock and roll guitarist period. I don't think there's any filter between what he can imagine and what he can do on the fretboard. I would also love to hear Rev. Horton Heat, Mike Campbell, Jim Campilongo, and Robert Rodriguez do some full-fledged surf. (Not together, but that might be cool too). —Swing! Twang! Shake! Twist! |

Robert Rodriguez had some Western songs composed for KilBill Vol. 2, on the special features section of the DVD they included the concert they gave at the premiere of the film, on that concert they include a song that is called "Fideo del Oeste", it's one of the western songs he did for the movie. —Augusto Vite |

Come to think of it I have heard a couple of tunes from the Blue Stingrays and I simply forgot Mike Campbell was one of them. There was one song I really liked, but I can't remember which one. I'll have to go back thru my LastFM history. Hearing Rodriguez play on the Kill Bill special features (yes, Virginia, there is a Tarantino-loving, surf guitar-playing clergyperson!) is what makes me want to hear what he could do with some surf material. He's a better guitarist than a filmmaker IMHO, and he is (usually) a good filmmaker. —Swing! Twang! Shake! Twist! |

Which is exactly why I want Mike Campbell to do another, more surfy record. It was too tame, not very surfy. Listening to Mike's stuff in the Heartbreakers I know he can be a pretty exciting guitarist to listen to. |

I really think some people just have a radically different idea of what surf music is than me. As the webmaster for this site I get 2 or 3 requests a month to link to some site or myspace page with their "surf" music. When I listen I hear bluesy acoustic music or new age-y crap. There are guys from the contemporary country music field that would kill on surf. Not only the studio hotshots like Brent Mason and Albert Lee, but even Vince Gill, who some might just know for his sort of sappy balads. Amazing player. In fact, Mark Knoffler once invited him to join Dire Straits. Their tone is almost there---very clean and twangy (pardon the expression). Wouldn't be as big a leap for them as for some of the rock/pop guys. |

Dont want to turn this into a Setzer thread but i just absolutly have to agree with the quote above!! I have the Rumble in Brixton DVD and in an hour and a half of live playing there is no squeekers or sqwakers and he is never at a loss for what to do fretboard wise. I try not to watch Brian too much.......I get so depressed about my own playing that I think about throwing all my gear in the trash and saying to hell with it. —2012-2013: FILTHY POLAROIDS |
